Dabangg movie review

The fight between good and bad has been the fodder of many a Hindi film of 1970s and 1980s. In fact, it wouldn't be erroneous to state that these films dominated the cinema of yore and a lot of us, who have grown up on masala films/wholesome entertainers, will vividly recall the serpentine queues outside cinema halls and a mad scramble to book the tickets of those films. Hardcore masala films were relished with glee by the audience then.

However, for some inexplicable reason, masala films became extinct or should I say, disappeared from the face of Hindi cinema over a period of time. GHAJINI and WANTED revived this genre, bringing back memories of the bygone era. Now DABANGG takes this genre one step ahead.

Be forewarned. DABANGG is rustic, has loads of action, harps on the age-old mother-son and varied relationships [half-brother, step-father], eventually turns into a vendetta fare, has a number of songs placed smartly in the narrative [including an item number]... but the packaging is slick and polished. Sure, it's old wine, but packed in a brand new bottle, with a new brand ambassador [Salman Khan] endorsing this masalathon.

Most importantly, it has Salman like never before. Breathing fire and venom, Chulbul Pandey aka Robinhood Pandey taps Salman's star power like no film has and the result is sheer magic. In fact, DABANGG stands on three pillars - Salman's star power, smashing stunts and super music.

Final word? Salman fans, rejoice! You walk in DABANGG with 100% expectations and you exit with 200% gratification. Entertainment guaranteed. This film will create a pandemonium of sorts, a mass hysteria, crushing old records and setting new benchmarks at the box-office.

Set in Uttar Pradesh, DABANGG is a story of Chulbul Pandey [Salman Khan], a totally fearless but corrupt police officer with unorthodox working methods. But even the most fearless at times face a tough fight with their innermost demons. Chulbul has had a bitter childhood. His father passed away when he was very young, after which his mother [Dimple Kapadia] married Prajapati Pandey [Vinod Khanna]. Together, they had a son Makhanchan [Arbaaz Khan].

Prajapati favors Makhanchan, which does not go down well with Chulbul. He decides to take control of his destiny and detaches himself from his step-father and half-brother. His sole attachment is his mother. However, after his mother's demise and an unsuccessful attempt to mend wounds, Chulbul snaps all ties with his step-father and half-brother.

Rajo [Sonakshi Sinha], with her unique perspective of life, enters his world and turns life upside down. Chulbul starts to see life more positively and also gets sensitized to the value of a family. But his detractors, especially the dubious Cheddi Singh [Sonu Sood], have their own vested interests and emerge as spokes in the wheels, putting one brother against the other. Makhanchan ends up carrying out an act oblivious to the consequences.

When Makhanchan realizes he has been used, he turns to Chulbul. Will Chulbul take his extended hand? Will the brothers be able to thwart their detractors?

The job of a promo is to give a gist of the film and prepare the audience well in advance about what to expect when they saunter into an auditorium. The promos of DABANGG have sent the right signals to the audience about it being a paisa vasool entertainer. Let's face it, DABANGG has nothing ground-breaking to offer as far as its plot is concerned. We've visited similar stories in the past, but what makes DABANGG shine, and shine brightly, is Salman's star power, which camouflages the aberrations wonderfully. The darling of the masses has been cast in a role that his fans love to see him in, which explains why this film works from start to end.

Like I pointed out earlier, DABANGG is special for two more reasons: S. Vijayan's stunts and Sajid-Wajid's music, with an additional song by Lalit Pandit. Talking of action scenes, Salman's introduction at the start and the fight-to-finish in the climax will send the masses in frenzy. To state that the action scenes are outstanding, especially the fight in the finale, would be an understatement. In the finale fight, when Salman's shirt tears apart and the rippling muscles and the bare-chest fight ensues, mark my words, it will lead to chaos at mass-dominated centres, especially at single screens. The climax will be one of the prime reasons for repeat viewing, for sure.

It's difficult to accommodate music in an action film, but Sajid-Wajid come up with a melodious score. The title track, 'Tere Mast Mast Do Nain' and 'Munni' [composed by Lalit Pandit] are the icing on the cake.

Director Abhinav Singh Kashyap is in his element. He's made an out and out entertainer with an eye at the masses and he succeeds in his endeavour. Doing justice to vintage formula is no cakewalk, let's not forget. Besides, the director stays away from going overdramatic while handling the dramatic and emotional moments. This explains why you don't exit the theatre with a spinning head. Mahesh Limaye's cinematography is perfect. I'd like to make a note of the editing [Pranav V. Dhiwar], which is super-slick in action scenes. Dialogue, especially those delivered by Salman, will be greeted with claps and whistles. Especially the one 'Itne chhed karunga'.

Salman Khan is the boss, when it comes to playing to the masses. This film reaffirms this truth. The role provides him ample opportunity to prove his star power and he does it with remarkable ease. Let me put it on record. DABANGG is yet another landmark film in his career, besides MAINE PYAR KIYA, HUM AAPKE HAIN KOUN, JUDWAA [tapping the funny side], TERE NAAM [tapping the emotional side] and WANTED.

Sonakshi Sinha looks fresh, acts confidently and pairs off very well with Salman. Most importantly, she delivers the right expressions and is not overpowered by the galaxy of stars in the cast. Arbaaz Khan is efficient. He underplays his part well. Sonu Sood is electrifying, matching up to Salman at every step. In fact, the fight in the finale between Salman and Sonu is awe-inspiring.

Vinod Khanna is excellent in a role that has grey shades. Dimple Kapadia is truly wonderful. Anupam Kher is, as always, good. Ditto for Om Puri. Mahesh Manjrekar doesn't get ample scope. Mahi Gill is alright. Tinnu Anand is effective. Murli Sharma is nice. Malaika Arora Khan sizzles in the 'Munni' track.

On the whole, DABANGG is a full on entertainer with three aces - Salman Khan like never before, stylish action and super music. It's a foregone conclusion that DABANGG will open huge. As far as the business prospects are concerned, the film will set new benchmarks, so much so that DABANGG will be one of the yardsticks to gauge the level of business in times to come. Sure to fetch an earth-shattering opening, the film will create a pandemonium at the box-office, cementing the status of Salman Khan as the darling of the masses and making the distributors laugh all the way to the bank. It has Blockbuster written all over it!

KBC is back with Big B

The big news in Indian television is that Amitabh Bachchan is back as the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati . This will be the fourth season of this very popular show which is based on the UK game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

The fourth season will go on air by the end of this year. However, the broadcaster will not remain the same. “The show will now be aired on a different channel,” says a top source from the TV industry.

Kaun Banega Crorepati was Bachchan’s first appearance on Indian television in 2001. In 2005, the show’s second season was called Kaun Banega Crorepati Dwitiya in which the final prize amount was doubled to Rs 2 crore. However, the second season was abruptly stopped when Bachchan fell ill in 2006. Bachchan announced he would return as soon as he recovered, but it was Shah Rukh Khan who finally hosted the show in 2007.

Anil Kapoor was also being considered to play the host in the forthcoming season. However, most well-wishers of the channel insisted that Bachchan should be brought back.

Elaborating on why Bachchan is being brought back to the show, our source says, “Both, Bachchan and Shah Rukh, respectively brought their distinct individuality on the table, but frankly speaking, Shah Rukh’s histrionics did not do go down well with the audience. There was a vast difference in the TRPs between the two seasons hosted by Bachchan and the third season hosted by Shah Rukh.”

It may be recalled that the hysteria, which prevailed during Amitabh’s stint in Kaun Banega Crorepati, remains unparalleled on Indian television. Dinner time at most homes was changed to either before or after Kaun Banega Crorepati went on air. Mondays to Thursdays, cinema halls reported a slump in night show bookings because everybody was busy watching Kaun Banega Crorepati in their homes. Reportedly, a theatre owner in Delhi, who knew Bachchan, had even written to him to change the timing of the show.

We sent a text message to Bachchan but he did not revert. The channel too chose to remain quiet. “An official announcement will be made very soon,” adds the source.

Kajraare postponed to Eid

Kajraare movie postponed again this time.

Ramzan starts from August 10. The film has a strong Muslim theme and the producers feel that the collections could suffer if released in the Ramzan month.

Our source said, “The producers felt that Eid was the right time for the film to release. But on the flip side, the release of the film will clash with that of the eagerly awaited Dabangg.”

When contacted, Himesh said, “I think if Kajraare is pushed from 6th August to a later date then it will be a blessing in disguise because Ramzan starts from 10th August and Kajraare has a very strong theme for the Muslim audience.

Whether the film is being pushed or not is entirely the producer Bhushan Kumar’s call.”

Aisha Movie Review

Aisha is based on Jane Austin’s popular novel Emma. Western filmmakers have attempted the big screen versions of Emma before and Rajshree Ojha has come up with a competent if not a fabulous Indianised version of the same with Aisha.

The film narrates the tale of Aisha (Sonam Kapoor) who believes in match-making as a hobby and follows it passionately. When she is done with match making of her aunt, Aisha takes a new entrant to her world as her next project. The girl is Shefali (Amrita Puri) and is from a smaller town and just reached Delhi to find herself a suitor. Aisha goes about changing the small town girl into someone more like her and then tries setting her up with a childhood friend Randhir (Cyrus Sahukar). Randhir loves Aisha and not Shefali and when Aisha gets to know this, blanks him out of her life. Aisha’s best friend Pinky Bose (Ira Dubey) finds a mate in Randhir and walks out on Aisha. In the meantime Aisha moves on to set Shefali up with another guy. All this while her childhood friend Arjun (Abhay Deol) tries to tell her that she is just making things worse for Shefali. By the time Aisha realizes things, it is quite late.

The problem with Aisha is that it is supposed to be a romantic comedy but it does not draw any emotions from the audience. The story stays superficial and there are no scenes – even the climax scene when Aisha knows she is in love – that are interesting enough. Also the scenes which act as a catalyst to the change in Aisha’s outlook are completely mistimed and not built well. Clearly the issue is with the screenplay. The dialogues are good though.

Technically the film is shot well and makes Delhi looks good. The costumes are a high point of the film and it will manage to set quite a few fashion trends. The music is good too.

On a scale of performances Sonam scores decent. Abhay Deol does his job well, though we wish we could have seen more of him. Ira Dubey, Arunoday Singh and Lisa Haydon are efficient. The real scene stealer though is Amrita Puri. She will bring a smile on your faces every time she comes on screen.

However despite numerous pluses, the minuses bough Aisha down in regular intervals and the two hour running time also appears tedious! So take your call, if you want to watch a light breezy entertainer that doesn’t really appeal to your heart but is beautiful to watch, go for Aisha.

Once Upon a time in Mumbai

An excellent form of sound excellence is proved through out by the great sound tracks. The name of this film is a very appropriate one and the main subject of this film is also the same that says about the terrorism. Kajraare Music Review

EXPECTATIONS
Music release of a Himesh Reshammiya album is an event. Gone are the days when he had an album releasing practically every month. All of this changed after he made his debut as an actor in Aap Kaa Surroor. After that he started creating music only for those films where he was also playing an actor, as a result of which the only new music albums of his that have released are Karzzzz and Radio. Whatever the fate of these films, the fact remains that both of these have boasted of a fantastic score. With Sameer joining hands with Reshammiya once again, one expects another musical extravaganza, especially with seven unique songs making Kajraare a grand affair.

MUSIC
A classy beginning by Sunidhi Chauhan followed by some addictive beats ensure that the title track 'Kajra Kajra Kajraare' would have a lot going for it throughout it's near 5 minute duration. Though there is a slight distraction that comes in with the club feel imparted due to a female vocal coming out of nowhere, it is the arrival of Himesh Reshammiya behind the mike which totally changes the direction of the song. He does what he is best at, i.e. going full throated for this love song which is attached to the roots and has a definite Indian feel to it. A chartbuster in the making, it may take a couple of hearings for it's sound to be grasped. However, once that happens, it is one long party, what with a 'Party Mix' following a while later.

However, it takes much more than just a couple of listenings to get a hang of 'Rabba Luck Barsa' which is a Himesh Reshammiya solo. The lyrics too are truly unique and though some may scoff at them, the fact is that for Reshammiya fan base, 'Rabba Luck Barsa' brings in just what they would have expected from the album. Yet another love song which is about the protagonist praying to God to get some luck raining in his favour so that he can be united with his beloved again, 'Rabba Luck Barsa' is yet another winner, especially in the 'Party Mix' version which brings in a new dimension to the song.

After a couple of beats based numbers, there is some 'thehraav' that comes in, courtesy 'Aafreen'. For those who have loved Himesh Reshammiya belonging to 'Ahista Ahista' zone, this is the one for them. Sung in high pitch again, 'Aafreen' with Harshdeep Kaur as the female vocalist has minimal instruments in the background and is totally Indian in appeal. A soothing track where Reshammiya excels both as a composer and singer, 'Aafreen' only makes one exclaim that he is too good to be wasting his talent by picking up projects so sparsely. Really, he deserves to be composing much more than he is doing currently and while it is always good to expect quality outings like this from him, a little more quantity would only help the cause.

Reshammiya brings a folk base to 'Tujhe Dekh Ke Armaan Jaage' which starts off quite slowly, though managing to keep the listener's attention on. However, as the song enters into it's second minute, the beats come in which bring in an added flavour to this love song. Yet another easy on ears number that hooks on to you in quick time, 'Tujhe Dekh Ke Armaan Jaage' sees a new dimension coming to it once Shreya Ghoshal joins in. With each of the four songs managing to make an impression so far, one only hopes and keeps fingers crossed to have the remaining three tracks bring in similar results as well.

The beginning of 'Teriyan Meriyan' promise yet another song belonging to the mood of 'Ahista Ahista'. A slow start makes one look forward to what Himesh has to offer in the song to follow and the wait is worth it once he comes behind the mike. Yet another out and out Indian song, it has some new lyrics to it which again could be a reason for a few to scoff at. Also, Reshammiya stresses his vocals a lot during his stint behind the mike. However, his fan base won't be disappointed as this one is again made especially for them.

What should work across segments of audience, with or without a fan base, is 'Woh Lamha Phir Se Jeena Hai'. One wonders how this song didn't quite make it to the top of the album because this one has a class similar to that of 'Tanhaiyaan' [Aap Kaa Surroor]. Boasting of some good musical arrangements, emotional lyrics and some spirited singing by Reshammiya and Harshdeep Kaur , 'Woh Lamha Phir Se Jeena Hai' is about revisiting the times gone by and reliving the glorious moments all over again. This has a potential to go all the way if supported by some strong dramatic visuals. No wonder, the song appears in a deserving 'Party Mix' version.

Last to come is 'Sanu Guzara Zamana' which is yet another truly Indian song in the album. A duet by Himesh Reshammiya and Sunidhi Chauhan, this song is yet another take on the good times shared by the couple which was once pretty much in love. With a touch of Punjabi to it, 'Sanu Guzara Zamana' has a 'ghazal' setting and allows the listener to enjoy yet another track which has in it to be popular in days to come. The 'Lounge Mix' only adds on to the strength of this album which can go all the distance if promoted to the fullest.

OVERALL
Kajraare justifies the faith that one had in Reshammiya as a composer (as well as a singer). A complete affair, Kajraare gives a listener a lot to chew upon and Reshammiya ensures that there is a mix of class and mass in the seven songs. Since his last two films haven't done well, the entire perception about him as a total performer has been challenged in the last couple of years. However, there may just be a surprise in store if the film turns out to be as good as the music here. With audience being exposed to newer music during last couple of years, there is a bit of ground that Reshammiya may have to cover all over again. However, once audience give Kajraare a hearing, it should be back to old times for Reshammiya with the music scaling heights all over again.

The 2nd half is better than the 1st ,loved Boman in it he was hilarious,Riteish was gr8 the girls were stunning, so sad that the movie turned out like that,waste of time .

Movie might be hit who knows, may be a blockbuster but that doesn't mean it's good money. Please use your pen as weapon not as money ng machine.

i really wanted this movie to be bad. and yes it is... though didnt watch, i can assure that its gonna lose its hold sooner and flop. SAJID KHAN JESE LOGO KE SATH YEHI HONA CHAHIYE bcz he had somewhat insulted people like ASHUTOSH GOWARIKER who gave us films like jodha akbar, lagaan, swades. (i am an SRK fan). still respect lagaan. but this iya sajid khan cant really come up with any good movie. he doesnt hv guts to make a good movie. feel bad for Akki but thats how it goes! FLOP.

The 'success' of a film pretty much ensures that a sequel will be released as soon as the filmmakers can collect enough elements from the previous film to roll cameras.

I suppose Phoonk [ Images ] by Ram Gopal Varma [ Images ] made enough money to justify the production of a sequel. The first one was about black magic, so I suppose this new one is about more black magic and a little revenge.

This time around RGV has handed the directorial reigns to Milind Gadagkar, the man who wrote the first instalment. And the film picks up not too far away from where the previous one left off.

Madhu (Ashwini Kalsekar, in appropriately grotesque makeup) has returned from the dead to torment Rajiv (Sudeep) and his family. They may have moved to a new home with a pool and access to a beach but it appears that the demonic presence has travelled with them.

Before long voices are heard all over the house, reflections disappear from mirrors and his young son Rohan (Rishabh Jain) is scared stiff by the doll his daughter Raksha (Ahsas Channa) brings home one day. Things come to a head for Rajiv when his wife Arati (Amruta Khanvilkar) is possessed by the spirit of Madhu who promises to do very bad things to his family before she exacts her revenge.

This movie does 'creeping dread' pretty effectively. The first twenty minutes of the movie focus singularly on setting up the family's move to their new home.

The floating camera work by Lenhert Pereira (under Director of Photography Charles Meher), the accompanying creepy background score (Dharam and Sandeep) and the effective sound design (Jayesh Dhakan) contribute to a sense of impending doom on several occasions.

That said however, too many sequences in this film promise a terrifying spectacle and then deliver a predictable 'been there, seen that' outcome, which gets quite frustrating after a point.

The editing is pretty lax and it often feels like several scary moments would have been more effective if they had turned up a beat or two quicker than they do on most occasions. Horror, like comedy, is all about timing and too often the editor gets the timing wrong on this movie.

Apart from that, there are also sequences where people don't seem to be arriving from point A to Point B in a logical manner. Like there is no logical explanation for how the kids ended up exploring the beach one moment and then wandering through the jungle behind their home in the very next shot.

I suppose it is too much to ask of movie children to not pick up random dolls that they find abandoned in a jungle. And I suppose it is also pointless to draw attention to the truly atrocious dialogue. Rohan seems to speak only in superlatives and cliches. Everybody overacts. The presence of Rajiv's sister Arushi (Neeru Bajwa) and her husband Ronnie (Amit Sadh) seems to be justifiable only as an injection of sex appeal since the lady prances around in tank tops and short shorts for most of her time on screen.

If one were to break this movie down into its component parts this is how it would play -- people walk around the house, its grounds, or the beach spouting inane dialogue; the camera floats away, the music builds to a crescendo and (occasionally) something 'scary' is revealed. Many of the previous movie's greatest hits are back -- the scary face at the window, the disturbingly behaving reflections in the mirrors, the crow... it is all filmmaking by the numbers. And it all adds up to a big fat zero.

The happenings in this movie are not as scary as the notion that producers are repeatedly funding movies like this. I suppose we get the entertainment we deserve but one can't help feeling that the man (Varma) who helped rejuvenate the horror genre in India [ Images ] might also be instrumental in hastening its demise.

Pick up a newspaper or surf news channels and I’m sure, atrocities being committed on students by teachers/principals wouldn’t escape your attention. Also do a Google and so many results on this topic would open up in a fraction of seconds.

Educational institutions – not all, but a few definitely – are in a crazy rush to create a brand for themselves and even parents [not all, again] are keen that their kids become scholars and whiz kids overnight. Resultantly, the child is not just burdened with a bulky school bag on his back, but also carries the burden of ambitions, aspirations and unfulfilled dreams on his tiny, frail shoulders.

PAATHSHAALA merely touches the tip of the iceberg. It attempts to answer questions related to the sanctity of today’s education system. It sheds light on the shortcomings in today’s schools and how morals and ethics associated with the teaching profession seem to have taken a complete backseat. Let’s not compare it with TAARE ZAMEEN PAR or 3 IDIOTS, although a few sequences, in these two trend-setting films, threw light on the pressures on students.
On the brighter side, the acting is distinguished. Nana underplays beautifully, Ayesha adds to the sunshine moments, but it’s Shahid who pitches in a commendable and convincing act.

PAATHSHAALA, penned by Ahmed Khan and directed by Milind Ukey, is well-intentioned. It has a lot to say, but the predicament is, what translates on celluloid is not razor-sharp. Of course, there are few defining moments in the movie, which do make you ponder on the plight of the educational system. But there are also portions – when the media steps in to boost the brand of the school – that are mumbo-jumbo.

Final word? PAATHSHAALA, made with noble intentions, could’ve been a splendid wake up call, but it runs out of steam midway!

The story begins with a new English teacher, Rahul Prakash Udyavar [Shahid Kapoor], joining Saraswati Vidya Mandir School. Though he strikes an instant rapport with students and teachers alike, he realizes that there is something amiss in the school.

Slowly, his doubts prove true as School Manager Sharma [Saurabh Shukla] makes many monetary obligations compulsory on the parents in the name of extra-curricular activities. He goes to the extent of punishing the students inhumanly when the new, unjustified demands of the school are not fulfilled by the parents.

When Rahul unifies the teachers [Ayesha Takia, Sushant Singh] against the atrocities of school management, Principal Aditya Sahay [Nana Patekar] defends the management decision. This comes as a shocker to the teachers as Sahay is known for his dedication as an educationist for last 32 years, which has built the school’s high reputation.

The situation turns grave as the school management becomes over-ambitious with its growth and involves media planners in the extra-curricular activities. This demands the involvement of students in TV reality shows and many other media activities used for building up the school image in public, which starts reflecting on the students’ stress levels. The pressure on young minds increases incredibly, leading to unexpected consequences.

One of my childhood memories is of a few students being called to the principal’s office and being reprimanded for not paying their school fees on time. In another instance, I vividly recall a student being made to stand in scorching heat, under the blazing sun, since he was up to some mischief all the while. The barbaric attitude was a way of teaching the student a lesson.

PAATHSHAALA brings back those dark memories because the film encapsulates these two incidents on celluloid. The problem with the film is, it gets very real at times, but gets farcical as well. The participation of kids in media activities doesn’t have a hammer-strong impact. The chilly portion and the director capturing it on camera, or the press photographer munching samosa as the kids get ready with a pyramid, looks unreal, despite being identifiable incidents. Even the climax is confusing. What is Nana saying in the concluding reels lacks precision.

Director Milind Ukey has filmed some scenes expertly, but, as mentioned above, the film lacks the power to make you do a serious introspection. Hanif Shaikh’s music is strictly okay.

Nana is very much in sync with his character. Shahid displays the vulnerability and helplessness remarkably. Ayesha is a complete natural, as always. Amongst the plethora of teachers and students, Sushant Singh does well, Sushmita Mukherjee is serviceable and Saurabh Shukla is so effective, you start hating him for his repulsive attitude.

On the whole, PAATHSHAALA is a well-intentioned film, but lacks clarity thanks to an uninspiring screenplay.

Finally Farah Khan has got into the lingo of ‘Lights, Camera and Action’ for her most-hyped film ‘Tees Maar Khan’. Of late the shooting of the Akshay Kumar starrer kick started in the locales of the Film City.

In fact the filmmaker wanted to start the shoot on the day of Holi with the actor. However as Akki was keen to celebrate the festival, Farah had got on with the shooting of a sequence where junior artists were required to feature. Now that Holi is over, Akshay said to have joined the team.

Currently they are shooting Akshay’s introductory scene, which involves masaledar stunts and comedy. It was for this very scene the production had erected a huge jumbo jet, designed by Sabu Cyril.

The scene involves Akshay being taken captive in the plane and in the course of the sequence he outsmarts everyone and escapes.

‘Tees Maar Khan’ features Akki totally in a new avatar, playing a hot conman. For this, he is being styled by designer Aki Narula and international make-up stylists.

All Eyes On Housefull

The promo which premiered with Karthik Calling Karthik on Friday has seen a good response from the trade and public and the film looks like the first big commercial entertainer of 2010. This year has seen Veer succeed in interiors and My Name Is Khan in big cities but Housefull could work in both interiors and big cities.

The last time Akshay Kumar, Sajid Nadiadwala and Sajid Khan came together it resulted in a big hit in the form of Heyy Babyy and it looks like the house full boards may well go up again on 30th April when Housefull opens.

Karthik Calling Karthik showed falls at most places on Monday despite it being a holiday for Holi. The business on Monday was around 1.25 crore nett which takes the film to 11.25 crore nett approx.

The film will find it tough going from here on and the first week is likely to come in around 14 crore nett.

Teen Patti did not fall as heavily as collections were very low anyway but still it managed to get a little benefit of Holi holiday. Teen Patti managed to add around 75 lakhs on Monday for a four day total of 3.75 crore nett.

Have you ever received a call from yourself? Is it possible in the first place? There are several theories doing the rounds about the two Karthiks in this movie. So what is it? Is Karthik hallucinating? Does he have a double role? Or a split personality? For most parts of the film, you actually buy the explanation that Karthik does receive calls from, well, Karthik.

Let's accept the fact that a concept like this instinctively generates curiosity in the film. But the real test is to make the story work in those 2 hours. Also - this is vital - the identity of the caller should come as a jolt when the film concludes.

KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK works in parts, but during the penultimate part, when the story shifts from Mumbai to Kerala, the sand castle, so beautifully built by debutante director Vijay Lalwani, gets washed away.

One doesn't want to challenge the behavioural patterns of a person with a certain disorder, but when it comes to the big screen, when you are narrating a story on celluloid, you need to do a lot of spoon-feeding and make it look convincing. In this case, unfortunately, the finale is just not convincing and therefore, acts as a spoilsport.

Meet Karthik [Farhan Akhtar], an introvert by nature and shy by choice. Karthik suffers with huge confidence issues and is miserable at his average job that yields less than average results. His boss [Ram Kapoor] treats him like dirt. Shonali [Deepika Padukone], his colleague, who he secretly loves, doesn't even know that he exists. Karthik is a loser. He knows it. He accepts it.

Suddenly, one night, the phone rings. And Karthik speaks to someone he never thought he would. He speaks to a man who also claims to be Karthik. The man on the phone says he's here to change Karthik's life. Karthik accepts the phone in his life and soon it becomes his guide, his mentor, his friend, his guardian.

KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK is a love story as also a suspense fare that teases your mind. Any love story works if the chemistry and also the moments between the on-screen lovers looks real and the chemistry between Farhan and Deepika works well.

Correspondingly, a suspense film works if the viewer keeps guessing what the culmination to the story would be. The mystery only deepens when not only Karthik, but also his girlfriend and psychiatrist are engulfed in this storm. All hell breaks loose when Karthik's life goes upside down and Karthik is back to square one. But from this point onwards, the graph of the film only goes downwards.

Debutante director Vijay Lalwani knows his job well, but he's letdown by his own writing. The second hour not only looks stretched [two songs flow one after the other, with the story coming to a grinding halt], but the pace also gets excruciatingly slow at this juncture. The climax, as mentioned earlier, is a complete downer.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's musical score is an asset. The film has some lilting tunes. Cinematography [Sanu John Varughese] is perfect. Dialogues are simple mostly and at times, very witty.

This is Farhan Akhtar's third film as an actor and it must be said that he takes giant strides when it comes to acting. The story throws several challenges at him and fortunately, he emerges trumps in the most difficult moments. This is, by far, his best work.

Deepika Padukone looks bewitching and acts natural throughout. Ram Kapoor is fantastic. Why don't we see him so frequently on the big screen? Shifaali Shah is excellent. Vivan Bhatena is good. Tarana, Vipin Sharma and Yatin Karyekar are serviceable.

On the whole, KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK is a decent product with an unconvincing conclusion. Watch it for the wonderful performances of Farhan and Deepika, if you have to. Caters to the youth in metros mainly.

Rizwan is undeniably the best thing about My Name is Khan. Director Karan Johar, the visionary that he is, injects new life into the stale Bollywood drama genre by introducing a mentally handicapped leading man and his loving wife, only to pull the rug from under us by transposing their roles when you least expect it. The acting is expectedly over the top, but MNIK thankfully does not completely reduce SRK, one of the best screen actors of all time, to a mugging embarrassment. Shahrukh really tries hard to dole up a studied, thoughtful performance, but the story is just terrible and written, no doubt, to accommodate several agendas. Kajol is brilliant and this time her eyes do a lot more tlaking than her words. Watch out for the change in emotions reflected so beautifully in her eyes as the film goes through its turmoils. The screenplay clearly shows that both Shibani Bathija and Karan Johar have done their research and done it well. You can see that in SRK’s mannerisms and in the bigger picture.
But the true credit of the film goes to only one person – Shah Rukh Khan. Shah Rukh Khan carries the story entirely on his shoulder without any crutches of make-up and prosthetics, his signature lover boy image left at the door along with the designer clothes or larger than life dialogues.

My Name Is Khan Has Huge Opening

My Name Is Khan opened to huge response with an opening of 90-100% at multiplexes. Single screens were in the 70-80% region. The film had release problems in Mumbai circuit but wherever it managed to get a screening there were huge crowds to see the film. The critics have given 4/5 stars but public reports are not at the same level. Reports are good but not outstanding like Three Idiots. Overall the film should emerge a winner and time will tell how big.

Striker had dull first week with business under 1.25 crore nett. DISASTER

Ishqiya sustained pretty well in week two with a 50% drop. The film did around 7 crore nett business for a two week total of 21 crore nett but with My Name Is Khan opening to such a huge response, Ishqiya may not be able to do much more business.

MY NAME IS KHAN makes two strong statements...

* The first: B.C. and A.D. are designations used to label years in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. There's a third designation now - 9/11. Post September 11, the world stands divided. Terrorist outfits continue to strike in the name of religion and the common man, not even remotely associated with these groups, is bearing the brunt. The world is not a safe place anymore.

* The second statement: There're two sets of people in this world - the good and the bad. No matter how strong the evil forces are, good always triumphs.

MY NAME IS KHAN mirrors the era we live in. Not a day goes by when you haven't heard/read/watched news of terror attacks and innocents being killed. We live in turbulent times. Also, the movie states - and states very strongly, without mincing words - Not all Muslims are terrorists.

Karan Johar's cinema got more real from KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA onwards. In MY NAME IS KHAN, the storyteller attempts to make a social statement and succeeds completely. At the same time, it takes no sides. If the protagonist says 'My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist', it also exposes those who misadvise the youth with inflammatory and rabble-rousing speeches.

Karan's take on the issue deserves the highest praise, since a subject like this is difficult to attempt. Final word? MY NAME IS KHAN is Karan, SRK and Kajol's best outing to date. Do I need to add anything more?

Rizvan Khan [Shah Rukh Khan moves to San Francisco and lives with his brother [Jimmy Shergill] and sister-in-law [Sonya Jehan]. Rizvan, who has Asperger's syndrome, falls in love with Mandira [Kajol]. Despite protests from his brother, they get married and start a small business together. They are happy until September 11, when attitudes towards Muslims undergo a sea-change.

When tragedy strikes, Mandira is devastated and they split. Rizvan is confused and upset that the love of his life has left him. To win her back, he embarks on a touching and inspiring journey across America.

Let me alert you. The story unfolds feverishly from the very start itself. So if you miss a scene or two, chances are you would've missed some vital links in the story. The fact is, there's too much happening in the first half. Although the narrative tends to get leisurely-paced at times, the wheels continue to move from one episode to another.

A number of sequences are endearing. For instance, the romance between SRK and Kajol is subtle, yet charming. But it's SRK's relationship with Kajol and their kid that's one of the best parts of the movie. Your heart bleeds when an accident occurs and their lives are torn apart. Kajol's outburst - first, when her son meets with a catastrophe and second, when she confronts SRK - are truly shattering.

MY NAME IS KHAN's strength lies in the fact that you root for Khan all through. At the same time, you are weighed down when he's in a vulnerable situation, especially when he's labelled a terrorist and thrown behind bars. You don't realize it, but the fact is that you, as a spectator, have already got entwined in Rizvan and Mandira's lives.

There's a slight hitch in the second hour, when SRK returns to Georgia to save a hurricane-ravaged hamlet. Also, the media exercise tends to add to the length of the film. Nonetheless, it's a minor hiccup that doesn't rob the film of its punch.

There's just one word to illustrate Karan's direction - exemplary. One of the finest storytellers of our generation, he deserves brownie points for deviating from 'Karan Johar brand of cinema' and attempting a film that knocks on your heart and stimulates your mind. With MY NAME IS KHAN, Karan takes rapid strides as a storyteller.

Shibani Bathija's screenplay is truly arresting. Shibani and Niranjan Iyengar's dialogues are noteworthy and many a times, applaud-worthy. Ravi K. Chandran's cinematography is awe-inspiring. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music gels well with the nature of the film.

When a film stars two of the finest talents of the country, you expect nothing but the best. SRK, well, how does one describe his performance? To state that this is his best work so far would be cutting short the praise he truly deserves. In fact, no amount of praise can do sufficient justice to his portrayal of Rizvan Khan, who has Asperger's syndrome. His latest work is several notches above anything he has done before. The only compliment that I can think of is, SRK has a new screen-name now. Raj is passe, Rizvan it is.

Kajol is pure dynamite and casting her for this character was the most appropriate decision. No other actress could've matched SRK in histrionics the way Kajol has. In fact, SRK and Kajol compliment each other wonderfully well and this film only proves it yet again. It's a powerhouse performance from this supremely talented actress.

The film boasts of a number of capable actors, but the ones who leave a rock-solid impact are - in this order - Zarina Wahab, Sonya Jehan, Jimmy Shergill, Arjun Mathur, Parvin Dabas and Arif Zakaria. Sugandha Garg is confident. Navneet Nishan supports well. Vinay Pathak leaves a mark in a brief role. Tanay Chheda [young SRK] and Yuvaan Makaar [SRK and Kajol's son Sameer] are excellent. The American actors, especially the kid who plays Sameer's friend, deserves mention.

On the whole, MY NAME IS KHAN is a fascinating love story, has an angle of religion and a world-shaking incident as a backdrop. It not only entertains, but also mesmerises, enthrals and captivates the viewer in those 2.40 hours. Milenge Milenge to Hit Screen this March

It's finally time for Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor to reunite on-screen as their long delayed film 'Milenge Milenge' is set to hit theatres on March 5, 2010. The release date has been confirmed by producer Boney Kapoor who continues to be passionate about his pet project in spite of it being in the making for half a decade.

"The principal shooting of the film is wrapped up and we are neck deep in post production. 5th March has been confirmed for release and we are finalising our marketing and promotional strategy," Kapoor said.

The film's leading lady, Kareena Kapoor has meanwhile silenced detractors who raised questions as to whether the former couple will come together to promote the film.

"I can't help it if the media chooses to report things based on their whims and fancies. Did I ever say that I won't be working with Shahid? In fact I loved Shahid in 'Kaminey'. He was superb there. Our personal equation can't define our professional relationship," said Kareena.

Shahid and Kareena were last seen together in the 2007 hit 'Jab We Met' which re-energised their fizzling careers and Kapoor hopes that the film directed by Satish Kaushik will achieve similar success. Shooting for 'Milenge Milenge' had begun in 2004 and this was the time when the real life love story between Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor was blossoming. Though the film was fighting it's own production battles, there was a subsequent halt when Shahid and Kareena broke up.

Many felt that the film may never see the light of the day but Boney Kapoor as well as director Satish Kaushik were confident that 'Milenge Milenge' will definitely hit the marquee. In fact the industry was quite surprised when the first theatrical promo of 'Milenge Milenge' was unveiled a couple of months back. Kareena is now gearing up to promote the film and said that she has no problems sharing the stage with Shahid.

"When I am willing to do films with him, why would I hesitate from the promotional perspective? There were reports some time back that I had said 'No' to shooting for a music video with him to promote 'Milenge Milenge'. Now someone has to tell me where did that come from? I am there for the makers whenever they call me," said the actress.

Boney Kapoor whose last production, Salman Khan starrer 'Wanted' was a superhit is meanwhile keeping his fingers crossed. Himesh Reshammiya is composing the music for 'Milenge Milenge' and the film also enjoys the status of a solo release since there is no other film planned for a 5th March opening.

Chance Pe Dance Movie Review

It’s obvious to have huge expectations from a musical movie, directed by Ken Ghosh, who is known as one of the pioneer directors of music videos in India. And the hopes even rise further if the project has the youthful Shahid Kapoor (post ‘Kaminey’) and the energetic Genelia D’Souza (after ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’) as its lead couple. Hence, everyone was eager to see a spectacular show with probably a novel storyline accompanied by some brilliant dance sequences, melodious songs, amazing picturisations and tender love moments between the young couple on the screen. But surprisingly, Ken comes up with a very poorly written, confused and un-inspiring movie as his third directorial venture after “Fida” & “Ishq Vishq”.

Right from the start, “Chance Pe Dance” fails to grab your attention as it straight away opens with a song coming from no-where. Even the titles begin after the song gets over, so there is no explanation why the song was there in the first place. Secondly, just after 15 minutes into the movie, a normal movie-lover can easily guess its complete storyline till the end and that’s where the movie loses its main ground of the expected box office success. Based on a routine plot of a struggler coming to Mumbai, with hopes of making it big, “Chance Pe Dance” has got nothing to stand out as its merit, apart from the spirited performance of Shahid Kapoor.

In other words, Shahid is the only “Chance” for the movie to impress its viewers and I sincerely doubt he alone would be able to save it. The flick has several serious issues in its execution, which forcibly restrict it to be called as a below average project.
Here they are for your consideration:

1. The moment a song starts in the movie, it shifts to a music video mold, which is no doubt the forte of its director Ken Ghosh. Though the songs are really a treat to watch, but it seems Ken worked more hard on the songs and less on his story.

2. The movie has a completely avoidable track of a school and its students winning a dance competition due to their dance teacher Shahid. The sequence, which is highly inspired from “The School of Rock” (2003), is not scripted well, gets hurriedly finished and looks like a misfit in the movie.

3. A director who can be called as the Master of Music Videos, ideally must have a good ear and incredible music sense. But Ken simply disappoints in this department as he is not able to get any good songs from the otherwise talented singer Adnan Sami. The music of “Chance Pe Dance” is a big let-down, especially with a weak finale song at the reality show in the climax.

4. It seems that both the writer and director are pretty confused regarding what their lead characters have to do on the screen. Shahid, who is supposed to be an aspiring talented actor, is more interested in showing his dancing skills than the acting. On the other hand, Genelia, who plays a choreographer in the movie, is given no detailed sequence of teaching the dancing steps to anyone. In fact she seems to be more interested in acting, with all her cute mannerisms and doesn’t even talk about dance in the movie. Mohnish Behl, is the most confused one, who at first selects Shahid for his movie and then suddenly rejects him, without any reason.

5. The most irritating one comes towards the climax, when Shahid is participating in a big channel’ reality show in which we are simply not shown any of his competitors. The viewers only get to see Shahid’s performance on the stage (that’s too a dancing one) and he easily goes on to win the acting contest and becomes a star.

In the acting department, Shahid is the only savior in the movie who gives a sincere and spirited performance which shows more of his sensitive and emotional persona. He might be counting a lot on this movie but may not get the desired results at the box office. Genelia as his lover, performs much better than her previous movies. But the cool and pretty girl doesn’t get a well written role and thus cannot be blamed for anything. Parikshit Sahni repeats his fatherly act of “3 Idiots”, but still manages to impress & Vikas Bhalla is a bit loud in his few scenes.

In the end, looking at the track record of the talented director Ken Ghosh, one wonders, why he chose this kind of completely predictable subject for his third important movie which also had the most sellable stars at his disposal. Was this the story he was working on, in this long gap of almost 5 years? Or the movie was a victim of an uncontrolled delay without his fault.

To sum up, “Chance Pe Dance”, which was more publicized as a dancing musical, has only few dancing sequences to watch out and no particular song to rave about. The choreography and song picturisation does entertain you at times, but in the absence of some equally good tracks and a novel script, they fail to create a lasting impact.

Veer Movie Review

VEER drives home a few hard facts...

* No amount of gloss can substitute for an engaging story.

* Not all directors are capable of pulling off a period film.

* No star - howsoever strong his rankings are - can infuse life in a comatose script.

Everyone's awaiting VEER with bated breath. The film industry will get another breather if VEER goes the 3 IDIOTS way at the box-office. The junta will have one more fascinating genre to look forward to, if VEER appeals to them. But your hopes go crashing as reel after reel of VEER unfurl.

Salman Khan [who has been credited as the story writer of VEER] takes TARAS BULBA, adds GLADIATOR, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, TROY, TITANIC and even KRANTI [the end is a straight lift of Manoj Kumar's Dilip Kumar starrer] and comes up with this khichdi which gets unpalatable after a point.

VEER is about a warrior and at the same time, it's a love story too. Sadly, neither does it evoke any patriotism, nor does the love story make your heart go dhak-dhak.

The writing [screenplay: Shaktimaan Talwar, Shailesh Verma] is so fragile that one is mentally exhausted by the time this marathon movie finally reaches its finale. Of course, Salman's star power tries hard to salvage the situation, but window dressing doesn't help if the store has nothing to offer.

Final word? You have to be a veer to sit through VEER. Colossal disappointment!

As the British enslave India with their devious Divide and Rule policy, kings and nawabs fall to their guile and cunning schemes and entrust their precious kingdom to the foreigners. Except for the brave Pindaris, who prefer death to dishonour and will fight to their last breath to save their land.

The bravest, the toughest, the strongest of the Pindaris is Veer [Salman Khan]. As Veer takes on the might of the British Empire, he also has to fight the conniving King of Madavgarh [Jackie Shroff] as well his own jealous tribesmen. At stake is his love for princess Yashodhara [Zarine Khan], daughter of his sworn enemy. At stake is his thirst to avenge his father's dishonour.

VEER has it all - great stars, opulent and majestic sets, adrenaline pumping action scenes, but no soul [read script]. The movie begins with a bang, but the moment the story shifts to London, it crashes!

Frankly, it's a screenplay of convenience. Salman meets the woman of his dreams within minutes of reaching London and that looks so unreal. You try to digest it and move on to the next scene and lo! The damsel studies in the same college that our hero has enrolled in. Now that looks fake!

The sequence at the interval is interesting, although it remains a mystery how Puru Raaj Kumar gets to know of Salman's identity. At this point, Salman becomes a killing machine, slaughters more than a dozen people in the hostel campus [including a few gora soldiers] and conveniently escapes from London with a badly injured brother [played by Sohail]. Now that is taking it too far.

The second hour goes on and on and on, emphasising on unfulfilled promises, seething anger and revenge, love and freedom and frankly, you are least bothered by now. In fact, you lose interest in the proceedings. Period. The climax is so long drawn and more of an anti-climax, while the ending is bizarre and unintentionally funny.

Director Anil Sharma fails to deliver. That's the bitter truth. The project had everything going in its favour, but alas, Sharma and his writers make a complete mess of the story. Sajid-Wajid's music is melodious, but why repeat one song ['Surili Ankhiyon Wali'] again and again? The background score [Monty] is top notch. Gopal Shah's cinematography is splendid. Tinu Verma's action scenes are dynamic and in fact, the saving grace of VEER. The production design [art: Sanjay Dhabade] give an authentic feel of the bygone era.

VEER rides on Salman's star power, but even his hardcore fans will be disappointed by this movie. Zarine Khan resembles Katrina Kaif, but wears one expression all through. Mithun is okay, while Jackie does his bit well. Sohail Khan irritates. Puru Raaj Kumar and Aryan Vaid get no scope. Neena Gupta is as usual. The English actors are stereotype.

On the whole, VEER proves the age-old adage true: All that glitters is not gold. The film may open very well at single screens thanks to Salman's popularity and the hype surrounding the film and may also enjoy a healthy extended weekend [Tuesday, 26th January is a holiday], but given its exorbitant costs and poor merits, VEER will face an uphill task to recover its costs. This one's a monumental disappointment!

Dulha Mil gaya movie review

In fact, MY FAIR LADY has been a hot favourite of Bollywood. Recall MAN PASAND [Dev Anand, Tina Munim] or HUM TERE AASHIQ HAIN [Jeetendra, Hema Malini]. Similarly, a number of storytellers have rehashed Rajshri's all-time hit DULHAN WAHI JO PIYA MAN BHAAYE [Prem Krishen, Rameshwari] in various avtaars, over the years.

DULHA MIL GAYA is a mix of the above-named films. Like they say in filmi lingo, it's old wine in new bottle. So what? How different can a love story be, since this genre has been done to death in Bollywood? Point noted, but the narrative ought to be engaging if it has to strike a chord and that's where DULHA MIL GAYA falters.

SHREK [and its instalments] has been one of the most loved movies of our times. An ogre falls in love with a princess and after overcoming their share of obstacles, the couple live happily ever after. Most Hindi movies take a similar route, don't they? We love happy endings. We want the underdog to accomplish his dreams. We feel euphoric if he walks into the sunset, holding the hand of his beloved.

A love story works if you fall in love with the on-screen characters and also if it knocks on the doors of your heart. PYAAR IMPOSSIBLE does that. PYAAR IMPOSSIBLE may not be the ultimate romantic film, but you can't deny the fact that there's something about this film that stays with you, that you carry home... sorry, carry in your heart.

PYAAR IMPOSSIBLE also works because its protagonists, Uday and Priyanka, deliver sparkling performances. No wonder, you get drawn in their world in a jiffy.

Life is all about listening to your heart and chasing your dreams. That's the essence of 3 IDIOTS, directed by the supremely talented Rajkumar Hirani. Let me come to the point right away. There are films and there are more films. And then there's 3 IDIOTS.

Come to think of it, 3 IDIOTS carries a huge 'burden' on its shoulders: The 'burden' of humungous expectations. And it's not without reasons...

3 IDIOTS is Aamir's next release after the record-breaker GHAJINI.

3 IDIOTS is Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra's third film together, after MUNNABHAI MBBS and LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI, landmark films.

Rocket Singh salesman of the year movie review

Some films absorb you instantly, from the very outset. But it takes time to get into the world of a salesman who thinks from his heart.

Come to think of it, ROCKET SINGH - SALESMAN OF THE YEAR is about a simpleton, but the story of his struggle and accomplishment isn't the kind that would charge you or make you charter a similar path in life. Also, the story of an underdog who comes up the hard way should make you feel euphoric in the end, right? But ROCKET SINGH - SALESMAN OF THE YEAR doesn't.

Frankly, ROCKET SINGH - SALESMAN OF THE YEAR is more of a documentary on the life of a salesman. It's a decent film, no two opinions on that, but the question is, [a] Is the story powerful enough to excite you and [b] Does it grab your attention in entirety? Sadly, the answer to both the questions is in the negative.

There's another problem and this is strictly from the point of those seeking entertainment. A Yash Raj film with Ranbir Kapoor [after AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI] essaying the title role, coupled with fun-filled promos ['Pocket Mein Rocket Hain'] might make you assume that it would offer loads of entertainment, but this has barely a song or two, as good as no romance and hardly any comic moments - the recipe for most Hindi movies.

In a nutshell, ROCKET SINGH - SALESMAN OF THE YEAR is a dull and dry experience.

Harpreet Singh Bedi [Ranbir Kapoor] has just graduated and his marks are, well, let's say a little embarrassing. But marks never stopped him from dreaming of an exciting and adventurous career, and they never will.

He takes a deep, positive breath and dives into the world of sales, rumoured to be an ultra cool career. It's everything he dreamt of, with its smooth dressing, smoother talking men and women who can sell ice to an Eskimo, dreams to an insomniac and a lifetime mobile connection to a dying man. But soon, his idea of success begins clashing with the strange ways of these 'professionals' and 'bosses' he looked up to.

ROCKET SINGH - SALESMAN OF THE YEAR may be based on a simpleton's life, but the viewer gets a hang of things only towards the second hour. The entire first hour is devoted to establishing the characters and also getting used to the way sales persons go about their business.

There's not much excitement in the first hour, barring a few attention-grabbing scenes that pop up intermittently. The story just flows, with the viewer not reacting much to the proceedings. But things change for better towards the post-interval portions when the protagonist and his colleagues' lives get complicated.

At least two sequences deserve a mention here. The first, when Ranbir and his boss have a lengthy telephonic conversation. The second, when the boss realises his folly and apologises to Ranbir. But, unfortunately, the culmination to the story doesn't give the feeling of euphoria or victory. Ideally speaking, it should have. That's one of the reasons why the impact is missing.

Shimit Amin is an efficient storyteller and he has been most faithful to the plot, but if the plot itself has its limitations, there's not much he can do to boost the proceedings. Jaideep Sahni has had the courage to narrate a new story, but the story is one-dimensional. Also, there screenplay is devoid of songs, romance and entertainment, which will go against the film completely.

Salim-Sulaiman's background score is effectual. Vikash Nowlakha's cinematography is alright.

Ranbir Kapoor is an exceptional actor and ROCKET SINGH - SALESMAN OF THE YEAR mirrors this fact. The actor underplays his part beautifully, which only goes to prove that he's equally at ease essaying straight-out-of-life roles. Prem Chopra is exceptional. A number of new faces enact pivotal roles here, but the ones who stand out are Ranbir's boss Puri and colleague Nitin. Both are fantastic.

D. Santosh is first-rate. Gauhar Khan leaves a strong impression. Shazahn Padamsee doesn't get any scope.

On the whole, ROCKET SINGH - SALESMAN OF THE YEAR is more of a documentary on the life of a salesman. Lack of music, romance and entertainment, coupled with zilch hype, will go against the film. A colossal disappointment!

In a recent promotional video on Star Plus, Shahrukh Khan revealed that the first look trailer of My Name Is Khan will be unveiled on Star Plus on 16th December 2009, at 10 PM Indian Standard Time.

The official theatrical trailer though, will be released with James Cameron’s Hollywood movie Avatar.

Co-written and directed by Karan Johar, My Name Is Khan also stars Kajol, Jimmy Shergill amongst others. The music has been composed by Shankar - Ehsaan - Loy.

The worldwide theatrical rights, on 7th August, was sold to Fox Star Studios for Rs 98 crores.

Release date - 12th February 2010.

"MUST WATCH RADIO DONT MISS IT"

When Himesh Reshammiya stars in a film, it's got to be a musical. Musical it is, but RADIO also attempts to explore the man-woman relationship in a metropolis.

RADIO rests on a thin storyline. Superficially, it's about a couple that goes separate ways, then man meets another woman, later ex-wife develops a soft corner, much later man is torn between the two women. Haven't we witnessed similar themes in the past? Oh yes, aplenty!

Only thing, director Ishan Trivedi places the story in a radio station and that gives the film a different texture. Also, the film is divided in various chapters - some interesting, some mundane, some yawn-inducing and boring.

The USP of RADIO is, without doubt, Himesh's musical score. The film has some melodious tracks, but how one wishes the super music was complimented by an equally superior script.

Vivan [Himesh Reshammiya] is a successful RJ with a popular radio channel. His wife Pooja [Sonal Sehgal] seeks divorce and the reason cited is lack of compatibility between the two.

Enter Shanaya [Shenaz Treasurywala], who is like a ray of sunshine in Vivan's insipid life. He discusses Shanaya with Pooja, but being a woman, she can see his love for Shanaya. In the end, however, Vivan realises that he may have a soft spot for Pooja, but he wants to spend his life with Shanaya.

RADIO rests on a fragile plot, with the writing holding your interest at places, but blowing away the hard work in its immediate chapter. That's how erratic RADIO is.

Confusion kya hain? The ex-wife can't decide if she wants her man back or not. It was she who wanted a divorce, not the man, but she can't let go off her man for some inexplicable reason. Even the other woman, all of a sudden, wants the man she loves so dearly to go back to his ex-wife. That just doesn't work!

Besides, the narrative is laced with too many songs. Whether or not the situation warrants them, you have one track ready to unspool every 10 odd minutes.

On the brighter side, RADIO has some tender moments too. Note the sequence towards the end, when Himesh pours his heart out to Shenaz. It's a beautiful sequence and the writer in particular needs to be complimented for taking a mature look at relationships.

Directorially, Ishan Trivedi cannot do much given the fact that he's handicapped by a sketchy screenplay, which, ironically, is also penned by him. Resultantly, the film grips in bits and spurts. Himesh's music is top notch. 'Mann Ka Radio' is already a craze and its picturisation needs to be lauded. The other tracks - 'Teri Meri Dosti', 'Zindagi Jaise Ek Radio' and 'Rafa Dafa' - are lilting compositions as well. Attar Singh Saini's cinematography is perfect.

Himesh has grown as an actor and that reflects in certain difficult moments of the film. Shenaz is natural. In fact, she gets it right this time. Sonal acts well, but her character is not well defined. Paresh Rawal's track looks forced. Zakir Hussain is strictly okay. Rajesh Khattar is good.

Tum Mile movie review

In TUM MILE, a couple faces two storms. The storm within, when they come face to face after their breakup. The storm outside, when a natural calamity strikes Mumbai on 26th July, 2005 [unprecedented rainfall devastated Mumbai on this date].

After JANNAT, director Kunal Deshmukh [KD] chooses a love story yet again. It's about an estranged couple, but the wallpaper in TUM MILE is the Mumbai floods. Naturally then, the expectations from TUM MILE are colossal, given the fact that TUM MILE is the first film that attempts to chronicle the natural calamity on celluloid, with seriousness.

Had KD limited himself to narrating the ups and downs in a live-in relationship, TUM MILE may've struck a chord. But if you're attempting a disaster movie [its promotions send out strong signals], you'd be eager to know how KD recreates the horrors of 26th July on celluloid. Let's not forget, the catastrophe is still etched in our memory and has tremendous recall-value.
While KD succeeds in depicting the tiffs between the lovers, it's the disaster aspect that doesn't make much of an impact. That's because you strongly feel that the infamous Mumbai floods should've been given more prominence, instead of using it as a tool to take the story forward.

26th July, 2005 rang an ominous bell for most, but amidst all the chaos and the tragedy, it re-united two star-crossed ex-lovers.

Two people [Emraan Hashmi, Soha Ali Khan] meet after a hiatus of six years. What starts off as a seemingly innocuous encounter on the same flight back to Mumbai, ends up as a rollercoaster ride through some of the darkest hours of Mumbai, as they see the city get swamped with disaster and loss... and are forced to stick together in this time of crisis.

Radio has already recovered production costs before release!

Any ticket sales will make the film show a profit!

Radio, starring Himesh Reshammiya, was made at a budget of 6 crore. The film has already recovered the amount spent by selling the music, satellite and video rights. Now, whatever money the film makes in form of ticket sales, will mean a profit for the producers.

It’s all good

Producer Ravi Agarwal is happy with the situation because his lead actor Himesh’s last film Karzzzz produced by T-Series was a disaster at the box-office.

Learnt from mistakes

A source from the production company says, “Himesh has learnt from the mistakes he made during Karzzzz. His strategy and vision for Radio is simple.

A different audience

Reshammiya admits he had gone overboard with the number of prints he released for his last film, “I have applied very different sensibilities for Radio. It is aimed at a different target audience than my last two releases.
I am glad that we’ve already recovered our budget costs. Also the tracks from Radio have registered the highest online download numbers.”

Post-release, Himesh plans to go on a worldwide tour promoting Radio. He adds, “The tour will include all his chartbusters and the revenue from ticket sales and merchandise will definitely be phenomenal. This again is just an extension of the marketing strategy.”

BLUE Movie Review

Blow the conch shells.
Beat the drums.
It's time to pop champagne...

BLUE, the most awaited movie of the year, with its canvas as huge as the ocean, comes alive on the Hindi screen this Friday. Like every biggie, this one also comes with the baggage of monumental expectations. With tremendous hype surrounding it, the inescapable question that crosses your mind is, will BLUE live up to those colossal expectations?

It requires courage, willpower, fortitude, vision and of course, the financial backing to accomplish a project of this magnitude. And debutante director Anthony D'Souza puts his skills and the financial resources to best use. BLUE is not merely a stunning looking film, it's also a well structured film. Most importantly, it's a solid entertainer that packs in so much in those 1.58 hours.

Final word? Go, grab a ticket, if you haven't booked one yet. This under-sea treasure hunt is a kickass film. A must-see for all those who love adventure flicks.

BLUE is set in the sun-soaked white sand beaches of Bahamas. Sagar [Sanjay Dutt] is a simpleton, while his friend Aarav [Akshay Kumar] is a rich, ambitious businessman.

Sagar's brother Sameer aka Sam [Zayed Khan] has inadvertently managed to rankle the mafia in Bangkok [Rahul Dev]. He flees Bangkok and arrives in Bahamas. But the dangerous men reach Bahamas too. Sagar is the sole person who can bail him out from this crisis, but to save his brother, Sagar has to wrestle with the ghost of his dead father.

If you're a die-hard moviegoer, you'd draw parallels with a lot of international projects [especially THE DEEP] that were set in the ocean. In Bollywood, flashes of the Dharmendra - Jeetendra starrer SAMRAAT cross your mind instantaneously, but comparing the two is akin to comparing chalk and cheese.

BLUE grabs your attention from its opening titles itself. The marine life, which you may've watched on National Geographic Channel or Animal Planet, comes alive in all splendour at the start itself.

The story is uncomplicated and Anthony D'Souza garnishes it beautifully. If the aquatic life keeps your eyes wide open, the action sequences are sure to make your jaws drop to your knees. The bike chase at the start, yet another chase subsequently, the chase soon after the interval [atop a running train] is simply astounding.

Anthony's expertise comes to the fore in several sequences. One sequence that needs to be singled out is when Sanju narrates the tragic past, how he was responsible for his father's death. It's simply incredible!

Major portions of the film have been filmed in the ocean and you can't stop admiring and appreciating the enormous contribution of the underwater cinematographer [Pete Zuccarini]. The lighting in those sequences deserves special mention. Also, the underwater sequences, which feature aquatic life like puffer fish, stingrays and sharks, hold tremendous appeal. Cinematography [Laxman Utekar] is gorgeous.

On the flip side, the climax could've been more impactful. The villain's track looks cliched, but you tend to overlook the minor aberration since the film never falls prey to mediocrity.

Anthony D'Souza is a director to watch. This film has style as well as substance. Also, it requires courage and conviction to think out of the box and most importantly, execute the material with panache. There's not much scope for music in an action thriller, yet A.R. Rahman's score suits the requirements. The Kylie Minogue track - 'Chiggy Wiggy' - is already popular. Sanju and Lara's romantic track - 'Aaj Dil' - is sensuous. The song at the end credits - 'Fiqrana' - has a lot of energy.

Sound design [Resul Pookutty] is fantastic. Action scenes [James D. Bomalick and R.P. Yadav] are a treat and, in fact, one of the mainstays of the film. Dialogues [Mayur Puri] are effective, while the screenplay [Anthony D'Souza and Jasmine D'Souza] is well thought-out, especially towards the second hour.

Sanjay Dutt carries his part well, although he looks very well-fed in some scenes. Akshay Kumar steals the show with a sterling performance. This would easily classify amongst his best works. Zayed Khan is highly competent. This, despite the fact that he's sharing the screen space with two hugely experienced actors.

Lara Dutta has never looked so good before. Though the story revolves around the guys, you can't overlook Lara's small but significant contribution to the film. Katrina Kaif [sp. app.] looks gorgeous and performs exceedingly well. The feminine charm [at the start specifically] would send the youth in a frenzy. Rahul Dev is first-rate. Kabir Bedi is hardly there.

On the whole, BLUE has style as well as substance. The film has everything going in its favour, right from its incredible star cast to the superb action scenes to the hitherto unseen marine life to the tremendous hype and hoopla. At the box-office, BLUE will strike like a hurricane in the festive week. It should set new benchmarks in days to come. In short, the business will be humungous.

Fans, rejoice, Salman is back with a vengeance with WANTED. This is his deadliest performance to date. Yes, you read it right!
Foes, sorry, you won't be able to lash out at him or pick on him or launch a vicious tirade this time. The spate of flops should come to a grinding halt with WANTED.

Let's get this straight. WANTED rides on Salman Khan's star power. He may not be the best actor in town, but in a film like WANTED, in a role that seems like an extension of his personality, you can't think of anyone else enacting this role with flourish.

The daring hero and his herogiri, the naïve girlfriend, the corrupt cop, the dreaded don, the don's moll, the fist-clinching henchmen... WANTED is for those who seek unabashed entertainment and relish masala films. Damn the indomitable critics, pseudo intellectuals and connoisseurs of parallel cinema, this one's not for them. WANTED is for the aam junta.

Radhe [Salman Khan] is a hardcore gangster. A sharpshooter with a sharp brain, he works for Gani Bhai [Prakash Raj], the dreaded Mafioso, but on his own terms. Totally fearless, Radhe single-handedly eliminates Gani Bhai's enemies one by one; making more enemies in the process.

He's astounded when the young and pretty Jahnvi [Ayesha Takia Azmi] professes her liking for him. Inspector Talpade's [Mahesh Manjrekar] lustful eyes fall on Jahnvi. He doesn't know that Jahnvi has developed a soft corner for Radhe.

Whether it's the Golden Gang or Data Pawle's Gang, everybody wants the biggest piece of the lucrative cake that is Mumbai and the only way to get it is to eliminate whoever gets in the way. As Mumbai reels under bloody gang wars, Commissioner Ashraf Khan [Govind Namdeo] vows to make the city crime free.

Director Prabhu Dheva serves a hardcore masala fare that's not inventive or path-breaking by any standard, but the execution of several scenes as also of stunts takes the graph of the film Northward. In fact, if at all there's any film that competes with GHAJINI as far as raw appeal goes, it's WANTED. Every action/stunt/chase here is choreographed with aplomb.

Watch out for the action sequence at the interval point or the penultimate half-an-hour. The climax is sure to send scores of action lovers in frenzy, as Salman bashes the evil forces black and blue. It wouldn't be erroneous to state that the climax is worth the price of the ticket, samosa, sandwich, popcorn, nachos and cola put together.

Not that this 18 reeler abounds in mindless action. As mentioned earlier, this one's a hardcore masala film and the narrative has its share of light moments and romantic sequences. Even the bad man here makes you laugh intermittently [when he's not spewing venom], especially in the sequence when the Commissioner of Police holds him captive in the middle of the sea. Even the romance between Salman and Ayesha charms its way into your heart. It's very likable.

But WANTED is not without its share of flaws. The film stands on a thin storyline and the viewer can guess what's in store next, which means that there's not much novelty in the plot. Besides, WANTED could've done without a song or two, thereby keeping its length in check.

Director Prabhu Dheva has presented Salman like never before. Most actors have drifted away from roles that hold tremendous mass appeal, that cater to the desi audience, like they did in the 1980s. SRK did it in OM SHANTI OM, Aamir Khan did it in GHAJINI and Salman does it so effortlessly in WANTED. The screenplay [Shiraz Ahmed] may not be foolproof, but it has its share of shining moments. Dialogues are clapworthy, especially those delivered by Salman.

Sajid-Wajid's music is of a mixed variety. 'Jalwa' is the best of the lot and the star presence of Anil Kapoor, Govinda and also Prabhu Dheva in this track will send the viewers into raptures. The remaining tracks oscillate between good and strictly okay. This review would be incomplete without the invaluable contribution by the action director. It deserves brownie points. Cinematography too is top notch.

Salman is like a ferocious lion who roars with all his might. The show belongs to the actor, who scorches the screen every time he displays the manic anger. Without doubt, Salman gives the power to WANTED. It's his best work to date.

Ayesha Takia Azmi is very good and the pairing with Salman looks wonderful. Vinod Khanna is sidelined. He deserved more footage. Mahesh Manjrekar is excellent. He's only getting better with every film. Prakash Raj is first-rate. The accomplished actor adds yet another feather to his cap. Govind Namdeo is perfect.

Mahek Chahal radiates oomph. Aseem Merchant is alright. Raju Mavani is effective. Inder Kumar and Sajid are okay. Manoj Pahwa tries hard to make you laugh. Prateeksha Lonkar is as usual.

On the whole, WANTED rides on Salman, Salman and only Salman Khan's star power. A masala film that's aimed at the masses, WANTED is backed by tremendous hype and hoopla, which will result in the film taking an earth-shattering start at the ticket window. The Idd celebrations in the coming days will only enhance the business of the film, which means that the film will have a solid Week 1. The holidays in Week 2 should also be bountiful, thereby ensuring a strong place in the 'Hit' category.

Tum Mile Music Review

MUSIC

With Neeraj Sridhar at the helm of affairs, what does one expect? Another 'Hari Krishna Hare Ram'? Or a 'Aahun Aahun'? Or a 'Chor Bazari'? Well, get set for some surprise as both Pritam and Neeraj make a conscious effort to do something completely different with the title song of 'Tum Mile'. This time around it's the feeling of innocent and pure love that takes centre-stage as Neeraj gets into the shoes of a lovelorn youngster who is plain and simple glad to have found the love of his life. A rhythmic tune that has a much better 'antra' when compared with 'mukhda', 'Tum Mile' has an elaborate setting to it in it's opening version.

However, to one's pleasant surprise, even better versions follow after a while with Javed Ali and Shafqat Amanat Ali getting their own solo versions of the same song. Frankly, the two singers do well in stealing the show this time around. Even though it's the original version which is currently on air due to ingredients that give it a popular appeal , the ones that should turn out to be 'lambi race ka ghoda' are the 'Love Reprise version' by Javed Ali and 'rock version' by Shafqat Amanat Ali.

Javed Ali takes huge strides with his soft rendition in this melodious outing which stays away from excessive musical instruments. On the other hand Shafqat Amanat Ali, who hails from Pakistan, gets another fabulous song under his belt after 'Mitwa' [Kabhi Alvidaa Naa Kehna] with this soft rock version of the title song. All in all, this is a song that grows on you and once the tune is set in mind, there is no stopping.

However, one is always greedy for more when it's a Bhatt-Pritam-Emraan combination and this is where the trump card is out in the form of 'Dil Ibaadat'. If one thought that Tum Mile was fabulous then one listening of 'Dil Ibadat' will quickly make you change loyalties. In this love song, K.K. has a number in hand which could well be an award winning outing if aided by good picturisation. If presented in a highly passionate and dramatic manner, something which goes with the genre of the song, 'Dil Ibadat' could well be the 'Khuda Jaane' [Bachna Ae Haseeno] moment for Pritam.

Special mention is reserved for the oriental touch to the arrangements which gives that added edge to 'Dil Ibadat' that also sees a 'rock version' as the album progresses. This is where one begins to draw comparisons with Pritam's soundtrack of Life In A Metro since that too belonged to a similar space.

The signature tune that is currently being heard along with the promos of Tum Mile kick starts 'Tu Hi Haqeeqat', which is yet another solo, this time Javed Ali at the helm of affairs. By this time, one realizes that the album is made of all-male singers. In fact this could well be the first ever instance for the music of a film with romance as it's strong point not to be featuring any female voice at all. Coming back to 'Tu Hi Haqeeqat', it is not as strong as the title song or 'Dil Ibaadat' but that's purely on a comparative scale. Rendered by Javed Ali, this one has a core Indian feel to it and is the easiest tune to grasp. Perhaps this is the very reason one looks forward to the songs that follow since in Tum Mile one doesn't expect Pritam to churn out a conventional Bollywood tune.

It's a journey into the 'youngistan' world with Mohit Chauhan taking listeners right into a campus through 'Iss Jahaan Mein'. A lively number with fast paced arrangements and a definite rhythm to it, 'Iss Jahan Mein' still manages to get a melodic base to it. Also, one has heard Mohit Chauhan in quite a few slow moving tracks earlier, most of which are quite sober in appeal. However, this time around he also lets his hair down and with an innocent appeal to it; 'Iss Jahan Mein' does carry enough potential to be yet another 'Junoon' [New York].

K.K. returns to the scene with 'O Meri Jaan' and makes sure that he gets to croon some of the best tracks in the album. This time around it's a sad outing for the entire team which makes sure that the song turns out to be an emotionally charged affair, whether in terms of composition, writing or singing. This one is again straight out of the kind of genre that Life In A Metro had established a few years back. If you had liked the songs back then, there is no reason why they won't work now in the context of Tum Mile.

Finally comes 'Soul Of Tum Mile' and as expected, this four minutes piece begins with the sound of a thunderstorm. There is a slow and steady movement in this instrumental piece which shows an escalation coming in at just the right junctures. Boasting of an international appeal, this piece become more intriguing 100 seconds down the line, hence ensuring that it would add on to the dramatic quotient as a part of the film's background during some intense dramatic moments in the film.

OVERALL

2009 is clearly Pritam's year. If he has enjoyed the biggest musical success in the form of Love Aaj Kal then he has also seen a steady success run of New York. If at the beginning of the year he gave multiple item hits in Billu then he has also got some pure and fresh music in place for Tum Mile. In between he has found some good tunes rolling for All The Best and Dil Bole Hadippa too, which re-establishes the fact that he is clearly THE most prolific hit-maker that we have in Bollywood today. This is what he proves yet again with Tum Mile where he gives Bhatts their very own Life In A Metro to be preserved and relished for years to come.

Music Review: Himesh Reshammiya's 'Radio'

A much sober and subdued Himesh is heard in "Mann Ka Radio", the opening track of the film. In the first listening, all one ends up focusing is on lyrics that go as 'Mann Ka Radio'. Frankly, it's hard to digest. However, as one gives the number a few repeat hearing, it's the music and the singing (in Himesh's new voice) that takes centre stage. What further impresses is the overall soft mood of the song that does the trick. Once the song reaches it's 'antra' portion, one gets to hear a little of Himesh in his vintage style as well. The 'remix version' only elevates the song further as it heads straight for the club. It's a Western bhangra fusion feel that "Zindagi Jaise Ek Radio" carries. Based on the folk flavor of Punjab and carrying a similarity feel to it, "Zindagi Jaise Ek Radio" is high on rhythm with the 'dhol' beats ensuring that the 'bhangra' mood is set right away. Himesh gets into his full throated rendition with this number (which also appears in a 'remix version') that does come with a sense of deja vu but one doesn't mind that due to it's foot tapping ability. The real album begins though from this stage on as there are six straight songs that bring that side of Himesh that hasn't been heard in the present times. It's the sound of guitar strings which begin "Jaaneman", a soothing number that is sung in almost an unplugged manner. A brilliant track that announces loud and clear the melodic mood that the album develops from here on, "Jaaneman" has minimal instruments in the background with Himesh holding centre-stage. His voice too sounds all smooth-n-silky which makes "Jaaneman" an ideal number for a candle light dinner. Shreya Ghoshal joins Himesh in this romantic outing and makes sure that "Jaaneman" turns out to be one of the best songs to have arrived this year.

Dhan Te Nan. Vishal Bhardwaj pays homage to cinema of yore and that's reason enough to go out and grab tickets for one of the most keenly anticipated films of our times.

A few monsoons ago, Farah Khan paid homage to the cinema of 1970s with OM SHANTI OM. Now Bhardwaj picks up characters that we have witnessed on the Hindi screen before, but executes it like Tarantino and Guy Ritchie do. He creates a film that's so different from movies we've witnessed thus far.

Let's say, KAMINEY is bold, stark, funny and unpredictable and that's what works in its favour. There're two more reasons: Shahid Kapoor and of course, 'Dhan Te Nan'. Okay, we've seen Shahid pitching in a sincere act in his earlier films, but KAMINEY should catapult him to superstardom. His double role in KAMINEY is exemplary.

There's another star in KAMINEY and that's 'Dhan Te Nan'. Your heart starts beating faster every time you hear this in the background or also when Shahid breaks into the song. The track is as big a craze as 'Jumma Chumma' [HUM], 'Ek Do Teen' [TEZAAB] and 'Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai' [KHAL-NAYAK] and will contribute enormously in attracting viewers in hordes.

Having said that, I wish to add that KAMINEY is not the usual masala film. Sure, it's a well-made film, but there's no spoon feeding here. One has to be attentive, very attentive to grasp the goings-on and also the twists in the tale. It's not one of those lock-your-brains-at-home types, for sure. And that might not be too appealing a thought for those who swear by candyfloss or meaningless ha-ha-thons.

To cut it short, KAMINEY is a film with an attitude. Like it or leave it, but you'd never be able to ignore it. Word from the wise: Go for this hatke experience!

KAMINEY is about a pair of twin brothers, Charlie and Guddu [Shahid Kapoor]. Charlie lisps, while Guddu stammers. They are as different as chalk and cheese. And they can't stand the sight of each other. Till one fateful rainy night, their lives cross.

Charlie gets mixed up in a deathly get-rich-quick scheme, while Guddu realizes that the love of his life, Sweety [Priyanka Chopra], has unwittingly put a price on his head. The brothers are sucked into a world of drugs, guns and money. Their lives collide head on with the lives of gangsters, rebel soldiers, rogue politicians and crooked cops.

The brothers have to run to protect themselves, their dreams, their love. And most importantly, realize that all they have is each other.

It takes time to get used to the world Vishal Bhardwaj wants us to enter. The characters, the relationships, the lingo, the tone and the setting... frankly, you don't take to KAMINEY instantly. But twenty minutes into the film and things start falling in place. From thereon, you're drawn into a different world completely.

The interval point raises the bar and also the expectations. The story takes a dramatic turn at this juncture, but minutes before that, 'Dhan Te Nan' makes the proceedings exhilarating and stimulating.

Right from the sequence after the interval to the finale, Vishal Bhardwaj peels off layer after layer, which erupts like a volcano towards the end. The end is long drawn and with so many characters in the film, it only takes time to give a culmination to each of those characters. And that gets tedious. The violent end might not find universal acceptance. Vishal Bhardwaj proves that he's a master storyteller. KAMINEY is a damn difficult film to conceptualize and execute and Vishal does it with gusto. Besides the soundtrack ['Dhan Te Nan'], the effectual background score only enhances the impact. The dialogues, also penned by Vishal, are super. At places, clapworthy. Tassaduq Hussain's cinematography is top notch.

Shahid takes a really big leap with KAMINEY. Note how he handles the two characters, Guddu and Charlie, brilliantly. This film is a step to superstardom and also which will open new doors and vistas for him as an actor. Priyanka is first-rate. She's so much in sync with her character. Also, she gets the Maharashtrian accent perfect. Amole Gupte is outstanding. An incredible actor! Tenzing Nima and Chandan Roy Sanyal leave a solid impression. Shiv Subrahmanyam and Hrishikesh Joshi are perfect.

On the whole, KAMINEY lives up to the hype associated with it. The film has three stars - Vishal Bhardwaj [a name that's immensely respected by moviegoers], Shahid Kapoor and 'Dhan Te Nan' - and this combo as also the crooked characters and a genuinely hatke subject should guarantee ample footfalls in cineplexes even after its initial weekend. The weekend business should be huge due to the holidays all through the weekend: Friday [Janmashtami], Saturday [Independence Day] and Sunday. Of course, the business is bound to be affected in parts of Mumbai territory due to Swine Flu, but the film should take off in a big way when theatres re-open.

LOVE AAJ KAL is a director's show entirely. The relationships here are complex because the couple in love lives in complete denial. It is to Imtiaz Ali's credit that he has penned an offbeat story, developed a complex but comprehensive screenplay and extracted sensitive performances from the principal cast. At the same time, the writing isn't the type that would appeal to all sections of movie-going audience. Besides, the execution of the subject and also the pacing in the first hour are deterrents.

Final word? LOVE AAJ KAL makes you fall in love with love all over again. Makes you value your loved ones all the more. This film is special!

Jai [Saif Ali Khan] and Meera [Deepika Padukone] is a modern-day couple in London. They are very happy together, but do not believe in tying each other down. So when life pulls them in different directions, they decide to call off their relationship, since long-distance relationships, in their opinion, don't work.

Veer Singh [Rishi Kapoor] is struck by a thunderbolt when he sees Harleen for the first time. He travels a thousand kilometers by train to stand under her balcony, only to have a glimpse of her face. And yet not speak a word with her.

Love Aaj Kal
Veer does not understand how Jai can treat matters of the heart without passion. Jai does not understand how Veer Singh could have been so naive and silly about Harleen in his youth. But as both stories unfold, we realize that the process of relationship might be different in different eras, but the experience of being in love remains the same.

LOVE AAJ KAL travels multiple continents and different eras. The subject matter is novel, never attempted before, but the material, the characters [Saif and Deepika especially] as also its execution is targeted at the youth in big cities mainly. As they say in filmi lingo, this one's a hardcore multiplex movie.

Another area where Imtiaz Ali experiments is by depicting Saif as the young Rishi Kapoor. It's a novel concept, no two opinions on that, but the question is, will it cut ice universally? Will people tend to get confused when the sequences turn sepia?

The film captivates in bits and spurts in the initial portions. Partly because the writing is so different. But the writing breaks new grounds in the second hour. It's in this hour that the film grips you completely, when the fragmented pieces are put together and a mesmeric picture emerges.

The second hour is the soul of the film. Right from the time Deepika decides to marry, till the last reunion, the film touches an emotional high. The sequence of events that lead to the culmination is incredible. Saif's interaction with Deepika at the marriage, or the gradual change in Saif's behaviour in the U.S. in the course of a song, or the realisation that marriage was a big mistake... moments like these take LOVE AAJ KAL to dizzy heights.

Imtiaz Ali is a genius. The film bears the stamp of an accomplished storyteller. This is a forward-thinking film that handles the new-age relationships with complete understanding. The songs compliment the goings-on beautifully. This is amongst Pritam's accomplished works. 'Twist' [already a rage], 'Aahun Aahun' [foot-taping], 'Chor Bazaari' [melodious] and 'Dooriyaan' [melancholic], each song is a gem. N. Natarajan Subramaniam's cinematography is fantastic. Editing [Aarti Bajaj] is wonderful.

Both Saif and Deepika come up with their career-best performances in LOVE AAJ KAL. Saif carries the most difficult parts with remarkable ease. Sure, we've seen him as the cool, urban guy in several films, but this one's the most demanding role and only a seasoned actor could've delivered it with such precision.

Deepika looks ethereal. Most importantly, in LOVE AAJ KAL, she acts very, very well. Matching up to Saif is no mean achievement and she does it in several scenes. This should be the turning point in her career. Rishi Kapoor is top notch. The actress enacting the role of Harleen is pretty. Rahul Khanna does well in a small, but significant role. Watching Neetu Kapoor in the end sequence is truly astonishing. She's so graceful.

On the whole, LOVE AAJ KAL is for the young and romantic at heart. Sure, it's not perfect, but the terrific performances, melodious music and stirring emotional moments [last 35 odd minutes] more than compensate for the hiccups. At the box-office, the film should start with a bang for four factors -- its novel cast, super music, great promotion and yes, Imtiaz Ali, a name that commands respect amongst moviegoers. Released extensively [approx. 1800 screens worldwide], LOVE AAJ KAL will have one of the biggest first weeks in India and also in the international markets. In India, the business will be superb across multiplexes, while single screens might not behave as energetically. But the business at multiplexes will ensure a fantastic recovery of the investment. Internationally, it has the potential to emerge one of the biggest grossers in recent times.

Aishwarya Rai, the international triple threat: model, beauty queen, and movie star, has taken the Indian film industry and the world by storm by leading many roles. Now for "Action Replay" she will be molded to look like an old woman. Sources say that Hollywood make-up artist were brought in to get the right make up on her face.

Vipul Shah the director of Action Replay says, "Ash did her old age make up with Paul, a Hollywood make-up artist. When we did it the first time, it didn't work out well. When you are doing age make-up, you can't correct it so it had to be removed fully and done again."

He also added that actress shows lot of patience in doing this character, "It took us six hours to got her look right. We started shooting at three in the morning and the shooting went on till 7 a.m.," he said.

Luck Movie Review

If you have witnessed Big Boss, Who dares Wins and Fear Factor, you don't need to see Luck, the film. It's all this and more. I guess it is the impact of reality television, which is taking its toll on Bollywood. Before long you want to scream Is Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao!

The dialogues are corny, there is no script and people are forced to gamble with their lives. At times, you feel even the actors are not convinced about what they are doing on screen. Ok. The action is top class. But what use are slickly shot action scenes if a tight script and a believable plot do not back it. Soham Shah, your luck stinks.

Sanjay Dutt is Moosa who runs a betting syndicate. Horseracing, cricket and satta are not for him. He wants to revolutionize the betting industry and has millions of dollars riding on humans who are high on luck. Here, the risk is loss of life. And the highest bet is always placed on Imran Khan (Ram Mehra). To cut back to Imran's story, his father did a Harshad Mehta and committed suicide. He is left with a huge Rs 20 crore debt to pay off and his mother is not even aware of it! Talk about Luck!!

As luck would have it, he meets Danny Denzongpa (Tamang Thapa) who is Moosa's right hand man. He is on the lookout for those with luck. Tamang promises him Rs 20 crore for 20 days of Fear Factor type of work in South Africa. As luck would have it, he comes out alive!

There is also Mithun Chakraborty (Retd Colonel Veer Pratap Singh) along with Ravi Kissen (Raghav) and Shruti Haasan (Ayesha) on who bets are placed. Veer Pratap is there because he needs Rs 25 lakhs for his wife's treatment; Raghav's luck saves him from the noose. He is a serial killer set free because according to the law, if a criminal does not die while being hanged, he has to be set free. His rope gives way. Super luck. And Shruti is there to take revenge for her twin sister who commits suicide. She thinks Moosa is the one responsible for her death.

In one round, there are 12 participants and Moosa tells them that only eight parachutes will open. Shruti says, ''That's sick.'' Exactly.

Shruti Haasan has screen presence and is star material, but she has to work on her dialogue delivery. Danny and Mithun are both trying to find their luck while Sanjay Dutt and Imran continue from where they left off in Kidnap!

You could safely bracket this movie in the league of CASH, TASHAN and RGV KI AAG.

Jashn movie review by Taran Adarsh

The Bhatts have often told stories that seem straight out of everyday life. Their new outing Jashnn also mirrors the thoughts of zillions of hopefuls. It's about a nobody who wants to achieve success in life, wants to live his dreams, wants to become a somebody some day. In that respect, Jashnn, with director duo Raksha Mistry and Hasnain Hyderabadwala in the driving seat, drives home the point convincingly.

You can't deny the fact that Jashnn brings back memories of the immensely likable Rock On!!, for Jashnn is also about a boy band, about dreams, about defeat and about success. Like Rock On!!, Jashnn also looks at relationships, but the relationships here are poles apart.

In this case, the protagonist (Adhyayan Suman) is living off his sister (Shahana Goswami), who is reduced to being the mistress of a wealthy entrepreneur (Humayun Saeed) who loathes the protagonist. In fact, the relationship between the siblings and also the volatile relationship between Adhyayan and Humayun are the mainstay of the film. Sequences between them expose the stark reality of life.

But Jashnn is not without its share of hiccups. The romantic track could've been as intense as the volatile ones. Also, it gets long drawn towards the second hour and robs the film of its sheen to an extent. But the climax more than compensates for the blemishes. Thankfully!

All said and done, Jashnn is yet another compelling tale from the house of Bhatts. Super music coupled with bravura performances from its principal cast makes Jashnn an interesting watch.

Akash (Adhyayan Suman) thirsts to become a singing icon. But though he has dreams in his heart, he is unable to find that distinctive voice that he can call his own, that will propel him to the top. Only when he confronts a bitter truth - that he is freeloading off his elder sister Nisha (Shahana Goswami), who, in order to offer him a decent lifestyle, has become the mistress of a rich businessman Aman Bajaj (Humayun Saeed) - is he is able to touch his inner core.

Call it irony or a twist of fate, but the person who sees him through this dark night and mentors him when he's down and out is none other than the sister of the person who he hates most in the world - Aman Bajaj. It is Sara (Anjana Sukhani), Aman's sister, who makes him realize that he is an extremely talented man and is simply going through a bad phase.

In the end, he not only touches his inexhaustible potential and becomes an overnight star, but also humbles his biggest detractor Aman Bajaj and in the process, lives up to the faith that his sister and Sara had in him all along.

Director duo Raksha and Hasnain step into a different domain after attempting thrillers. And the relationships here are too complex. For instance, watch out for the tiff between Adhyayan and Humayun, when the latter abuses Shahana. The subsequent sequence, when Adhyayan apologises to Humayun at his office, is heart-breaking. Then there's the one where Adhyayan and Shahana enter Anjana's party and the confrontation that ensues with Humayun. Another master stroke!

In the post-interval portions, Adhyayan's demo is rejected by the music company baron and his outburst at this point breaks your heart! The same night, he takes refuge in drinks and even robs money from another guest at the hotel. What happens thereafter is astonishing.

In the climax, Adhyayan calls his sister on stage and makes her accept the trophy from Humayun. Clapworthy and deeply emotional!

But, as mentioned earlier, Jashnn loses its grip during the romantic sequences. The film dips in the second hour, which is long drawn and half as convincing at times. The low phase that Adhyayan goes through could've been more effective and shorter.

Jashnn Director duo Raksha and Hasnain show sparks of brilliance in the above-mentioned scenes and they get solid help from writer Shagufta Rafique, whose screenplay is watertight, barring certain portions mentioned earlier. You expect every Bhatt movie to be embellished with melodious and soulful music and the songs in Jashnn are seeped in melody, especially the final track. Dialogues are powerful and dipped in acid at times. Camerawork is up to the mark.

All four actors shine in their respective roles. Adhyayan Suman takes giant strides. Note the helplessness, the sorrow, the dejection and the eventual exhilaration. This is Adhyayan's showreel. Humayun Saeed, from across the border, is brilliant. This film makes you wake up to this talent, which gives the film a rich texture. Here's an actor to watch. Shahana Goswami is already going from strength to strength and Jashnn only proves that she's matchless. She handles her part with amazing understanding. Anjana Sukhani is a revelation. Again, this film should act as a showreel for her. She's excellent.

On the whole, Jashnn is a moving tale with three USPs - its music, the emotional quotient and the performances by its four actors. Despite some loose ends, it should slowly and steadily win over cinegoers based on these three factors.

You won’t regret watching Jashnn but then again don’t expect anything great. Jashnn promises celebration moments as much as an old wine in new bottle.

The first thing that goes against this film is its title. Frankly, a title like "Morning Walk" with a plot revolving around senior citizens, has every chance of alienating a large segment of the audience. Also, the film's release is a little ill-timed. Arriving at theatres when there is a plethora of new releases, "Morning Walk" can't be expected to attract audiences enough.

What one gets to see is a tale that immediately reminds one of the 1980s. Of course the makers may argue that the emotions have remained the same for generations, let alone just a couple of decades. But at the end of the day, audiences look for entertainment in whatever shape or format it is served. And that is not really the high point of "Morning Walk".

What is further surprising is that the entire angle of Anupam Kher, his one-time beloved Sharmila Tagore and her daughter Nargis is straight out of a lesser known film called "Lovesongs - Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow".

You can't be blamed if you haven't even heard about this English film starring Om Puri and Jaya Bachchan. It was one of films that did really badly in 2008.

That film too saw its lead protagonists accidentally meeting after decades with a revival of bond between them. The film was an exhausting tale that read like a chapter in the life of a woman who had seen major lows in her life and had come out mentally stronger.

In case of "Morning Walk", the story is told from the point of view of a man. Even though the storyline is predictable but it is the performances that keep the film afloat to an extent. Of course that's something which is expected when a filmmaker manages to rope in veterans like Anupam Kher and Sharmila Tagore.

Meanwhile Divya Dutta, who plays Anupam Kher's daughter-in-law, bags one of the meatiest roles of her career. Some of the better scenes in the film are reserved for her. As for Rajit Kapoor, a regular with Shyam Benegal, he plays his part of Kher's son mechanically.

Shayan Munshi may not be the most pivotal part of "Morning Walk" but thankfully perks up the proceedings every time he comes on screen. He carries forward his 'Mr. Nice Boy' image - something that he has built from his "Jhankaar Beats" days.

Actress Nargis, whose claim to fame has been "Garam Masala" opposite Akshay Kumar settles down for a lesser part in "Morning Walk".

All in all, the film is a regular family drama, something that may have worked 20 years back. But in today's time when there are 100 entertainment channels airing 500 daily soaps with 80 percent of them taking a sneak-peak into a regular Indian household, it is expecting too much from audiences to step out of their living rooms and spend money to watch "Morning Walk" in theatres.

Bizarre has a new meaning and it's called KAMBAKKHT ISHQ.

Of late, Akshay Kumar has earned the reputation of making you laugh in film after film. You expect KAMBAKKHT ISHQ, his new outing, to transport you to ha-ha-land, given the smart-n-chic promos of the film.

KAMBAKKHT ISHQ belongs to the same family of films which have wooed the masses, such as MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI, WELCOME, SINGH IS KINNG and GOLMAAL RETURNS. The prime motive is to entertain you for the next 2 hours, logic be damned.

Yet, KAMBAKKHT ISHQ is different because it depicts the battle of the sexes, a theme that's rarely depicted on the Hindi screen. The lingo is poles apart, so is the attitude. In fact, this is a modern take on relationships, with the two hours divided between laughter and emotions, frivolous and reality.

Let's get this straight. KAMBAKKHT ISHQ works in most parts thanks to the kind of star power and energy that the two actors pack in -- Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor. It would've been difficult to hold the film from falling apart had the two actors not been competent enough to carry off their respective parts. Also, the presence of Hollywood stars -- Sylvester Stallone, Brandon Routh and Denise Richards -- the first on the Hindi screen, is an added bonus. 1 pe 2 ka offer; Bollywood stars ke saath Hollywood free!

The focus is on the entertainment quotient. There are moments when you laugh so uncontrollably that it gets embarrassing and there are times when you continue smiling, even during the most ordinary scenes.

But KAMBAKKHT ISHQ dips in its second hour because you expect it to be as frivolous as the first hour, but it changes tracks and gets emotional. Things would've gone wrong had the end stumbled and fumbled, but it doesn't. The finale, in fact, takes the film back to the level that one expects from a film of this magnitude.

To sum up, KAMBAKKHT ISHQ offers you value for time and also, value for money. It offers loads of entertainment in those 2 + hours, loads of glamour in those 130 odd minutes, from start to end. Sure, there are blemishes, but they're trivial when you look at the larger picture.

KAMBAKKHT ISHQ explores the relationship between two individuals who are as different as chalk and cheese. Viraj [Akshay Kumar] is a stuntman in Hollywood, who lives by the mantra 'women are only good for two things'. Simrita [Kareena Kapoor] is a firebrand who is more than able to stare down the most arrogant male with her caustic wit and sardonic tongue.

So what happens when the two people who hate each other the most meet at Simrita's best friend Kamini's [Amrita Arora] and Viraj's brother Lucky's [Aftab Shivdasani] wedding? A wedding that both Viraj and Simrita are violently opposed to and desperate to stop. Sparks fly... the battle of the sexes in on.

Director Sabbir Khan's motive is simple: Entertain for the next 2 hours. The entire first hour moves at a lightening speed, making you enjoy the war of words between Akshay and Kareena at regular intervals.

The first half abounds in terrific moments, but I'd like to single out at least three...

* One, the church wedding of Aftab and Amrita. When the battle lines are drawn.

* Two, the sequence at the operation table, when Akshay spots Kareena.

* Three, the interval point. The pendant connection. Howlarious sequences all!

The post-interval starts with a bang, with Akshay hearing the 'Om Mangalam' chant just about everywhere -- while sleeping, in the shower, in the rest room, even at an award function. The award function sequence is a double whammy. You get to watch Stallone and also the scene is superbly structured, executed and enacted.

Things are smooth sailing till the emotional angle comes up. The narrative dips in those 20 odd minutes. The mood suddenly shifts from laughter to sadness. The makers may argue that a twist in the tale is justified from the writing point of view, since the emotional track is vital for any love story, but the fact remains that one does miss the entertainment quotient here. In fact, the dip in the second hour erodes, to a large extent, the impression that the first half had built so magnificently.

Director Sabbir Khan picks up a theme that may catch you by complete surprise, but marinates it in entertainment, garnishes it well and presents it like never before. The review would be incomplete if we failed to highlight the grandiose look and the lavish production values thanks to the no-holds-barred expenses by producer Sajid Nadiadwala. Each frame looks ostentatious and glitzy.

Music is up to the mark, with three interesting tracks -- 'Om Mangalam' [RDB], 'Lakh Lakh' and 'Bebo' [Anu Malik]. Cinematography [Vikas Sivaraman] is magnificent, with the DoP doing complete justice to the production values.

KAMBAKKHT ISHQ belongs to both, Akshay and Kareena. Akshay is dynamic this time. He received a lot of flak for CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA and there was this nagging feeling that the negativity would spill over to KAMBAKKHT ISHQ. But Akshay is in terrific form here and delivers, without a shred of doubt, a bravura performance. If you loved him in NAMASTEY LONDON and SINGH IS KINNG, you'd fall in love with Akki and his comic timing all over again this time.

Kareena left an indelible impression in JAB WE MET and creates a similar impact, albeit in a different role. Her role has shades of 'Poo' in K3G, but the glam looks combined with that rare confidence takes this performance to dizzy heights. Clearly, Kareena is miles ahead of her contemporaries as far as talent goes and this film proves it yet again.

Aftab and Amrita are perfect for their parts. Vindu Singh supports well. Javed Jaffrey doesn't make a mark because the role has no connection with the main plot. Kirron Kher is getting typecast. Boman Irani is hilarious in that lone sequence. Stallone, Brandon Routh and Denise Richards are well integrated in the narrative.

On the whole, KAMBAKKHT ISHQ will strike a chord with the youth and those who relish zany and madcap entertainers. The first half is tremendous, while the second half takes a dip, with the film picking up towards the climax. At the box-office, the film will see an earth-shattering opening weekend and a historic Week 1. It remains to be seen how this film fares in its second weekend/week, given the massive number of screens it has opened globally [2,000 +]. However, the timing is most appropriate [the viewer is thirsting for a biggie] and the hype is tremendous, which should prove very advantageous for the film.

Hurt and miserable, Shekhar plunges into depression and soon, his wife Mansi (Amrita Rao) also leaves him. Now, Shekhar has only one aim in life - to get even with Chandu. As the film moves ahead, a hilarious fable of con, trickery, fame and the consequent descent comes up.

Omar [Neil Nitin Mukesh] has gone abroad for the first time in his life and soon enough, he begins to see and love America through the eyes of his American friends, Sam [John Abraham] and Maya [Katrina Kaif]. But an incident changes the world round them.

At this point enters Agent Roshan [Irrfan], an FBI agent, who sets the ball rolling for a series of tumultuous events that turn the lives of these friends upside down.

NEW YORK affects you like no other Hindi film has done so far [on 9/11]. In fact, there are portions that give you goose bumps, especially towards the second half of the film, when John recounts his past.

One of the reasons why NEW YORK works is because not once does Kabir Khan borrow from the past or tilt towards predictable stuff. You just can't guess what and where the story is headed and what the culmination would be. The director and his team of writers establish the plot and characters beautifully, but the real action is reserved for the second half. The nightmarish experience that John undergoes is disturbing, but lifts the film several notches up.

But NEW YORK has its share of loose ends. The film dips in the second hour. It tends to gets lengthy before it reaches a powerful, brilliantly executed climax. Also, a few sequences only add to the length of the film, which could've been curtailed in the writing stage itself.

Director Kabir Khan picks up a real incident -- innocent civilians being suspected as terrorists, soon after 9/11 -- and weaves a brilliant tale around it. The screenplay is its biggest star, without a doubt. Given the fact that NEW YORK isn't one of those routine masala fares, Kabir has injected songs only when required. Cinematography is striking.

Now here's another surprise. John, Katrina and Neil, all actors, deliver their career-best performance. If the first half belongs to Neil, John takes over the second hour completely. John is superb when he recalls the past. You can feel his pain, that effective is his performance. Also, note his expressions towards the end. This is a different John, for sure. Just one word for his performance -- fabulous!

Neil was remarkable in JOHNNY GADDAAR, but disappointed in AA DEKHEN ZARA. Fortunately, he's in top form this time around. Katrina gives you the biggest surprise. Known for her glamour roles, Katrina proves that she can deliver if the director and writer offer her a role of substance. She's outstanding. In fact, people will see a new, different Katrina this time. Irrfan is, as always, first-rate.

On the whole, NEW YORK is amongst the finest films produced by Yash Raj. At the box office, there's no stopping this one. Go for it now!

Kites to be release in December

The seeming deadlock over the release of the much-hyped Kites is now over. Producer Rakesh Roshan and director Anurag Basu have agreed on how different the English and Hindi versions of the film would be.

While the supposed steamy scenes would be the same in both versions, there would be separate voiceovers in Hindi and English, both done by Hrithik Roshan, whose love story the film chronicles in a style that would recall David Lean's Brief Encounter and K. Balachander's Ek Dujje Ke Liye.

Director Anurag Basu refutes the rumour that the steamy scenes in the two versions will be different in Hindi and English. "We can't cheat Hindi audiences. The so-called steamy scenes will be the same in both versions. The visuals will remain unchanged in both. There won't be anything radically different in the two versions because Hrithik and Barbara Mori speak English-Hindi and Spanish, respectively in both English and Hindi."

So what would make the two versions different? "The narrative, the voiceover. Hrithik Roshan will do the voiceover. In the Hindi version, Hrithik will do the voiceover in Hindi and in English, he'll do it English. That would be the basic difference between the two versions."

About being designated the director of the decade at IIFA, Rakesh Roshan says, "I'm flattered. There were other truly deserving directors in the reckoning. I must've done something right."

Paying guest Movie review

Before we get down to discussing whether Paying Guest, a comic caper directed by Paritosh Painter, is worth a watch this weekend in theatre or not, let’s take a look at the story.

Paying Guest revolves around four young, carefree and perky guys (Shreyas Talpade, Javed Jaffrey, Ashish Chowdhary and Vatsal Sheth). The four go through a series of ultra comical hurdles in attempts to find a shelter that can tolerate their combined problems. The owner Ballu (Johnny Lever) puts across a crazy condition, he would rent the place only to couples. With no other option left, these guys give in to the condition laid by the owner. The rest of the story revolves around how they manage to get their wives and tackle issues that follow.

For a director who has directed a number of theatre plays, one would think handling a comical shouldn’t be much of a problem. But on debut, Paritosh Painter seems to have got it all wrong. If you expect Paying Guest to be a fun filled ride with rib tickling sequences; you will be highly disappointed. The poor writing lets the movie down and makes it a pain to sit through after the initial sequences.

Paying Guests begins well, the first few reels are funny but just when your expectations, on actually enjoying a movie at a big screen after a real long time, rise; the movie dips to an all time low. The comedy looks forced as the director and actor struggle to make you laugh. The dialogues are lame and so is the music score by Sajid-Wajid.

When it comes to performances, the leading ladies are just pure eye candies and have nothing much to do. However Celina Jaitley and Neha Dhupia have more screen time. Amongst the rest, Shreyas Talpade stands out with his perfect comic timing. Javed Jaffery is equally competent and manages to make you laugh. Ashish Chowdhary and Vastal Seth are good. Chunkey Pandey and Inder Kumar are wasted.

Overall, Paying Guest charges you for boredom. Yet another movie this year, that deserves a skip. All hopes on Yashraj Films’ New York now, the movie releases next week!

Pritam again steals music for the 49th time

Well my sweetie pies, Juicy Mausi is little upset. When will Pritam stop being a copy cat I wonder. Every time there is a release he is there hogging the limelight, but for all the wrong reasons.

While the nation is thumping their feet along to the new hit Hai Junoon from the movie New York, we get this news of plagiarism. Music director Pritam's song being a copy of an Indonesian song has thrown everyone into a tizzy.

Of course, this is not the first time something like this has happened. Sanjay Raina, an indi-pop singer claimed ownership for the track Shikdum from Dhoom, while many other songs other parts of the world such as from Pakistani singer Waris Baig, yesteryear band Boney M have also been copied. Tu Jo nahi from Woh Lamhe was taken from SB John's song of the same name, but Pritam has claimed to "recreate" it.

Last heard, the info about Hai Junoon being allegedly plagiarised was revealed by Pankaj Awasthi, another music director. Awasthi is one of the composers of the soundtrack for New York, too.

Apparently, a day before the music of the film was released; Awasthi posted a comment on the youtube.com link for the Samsons' song Naluri Lelaki. He wrote that the song had been copied by a big film which will make millions. But to my surprise, when I checked the site now, the comment has been taken off.

All we can do is wait for what Pritam has to say now.

Kal Kisne Dekha Movie Review

So after a long time a movie released on which the people show some interest, lets read out what the movie is all about. Come on, you can't really expect to discuss Kal Kissne Dekha as if it was an actual film, can you? Please. This is nothing but showreel in cinema's clothing, a heavily-budgeted demo film to someday take as an audition tape to real filmmakers. That is the only way to explain how it introduces us to the affectedly, moronically 'nice' Jackky Bhagnani, and goes on to show us how he can dance, fight, ride bikes and, a staple for any wannabe star, bask in sunlight draped in cardigans with his arms raised a la Shah Rukh Khan. There's also a girl, Vaishali Desai, whose showreel is intended to net her a shampoo commercial. This would be the only plausible reason for the way she presumably heads to a beauty salon before college, a new hairdo every single morning. Wow. She also tries -- but only the littlest possible extent -- to actually have something similar to what is called a character graph, which means she goes from being snooty to chirpy to scared as the 'film' carries on. VaishaliDon't get me wrong, I have nothing against Jackky or Vaishali, who may well be pleasant enough kids on their ownsome. It's just that they, the poor little rich darlings, happen to have been born into film families, which these days means that -- after daddy buys them a sportscar and a horse and holidays around the world -- he must also buy them a pretty little launch vehicle, hoardings with their faces on it and a cartload of hype. It's unfair to the kids, who, based on what has released in theatres today, clearly have no business being lead actors of a movie. Forgive them, for they know not what they do. KKD is about a kid who can look into the future, and about all the movies Jackky presumably likes, chief among them Main Hoon Na. Along the way, the wannabe star-launch tragically impacts a wasted Ritesh Deshmukh and Rahul Dev, a pretty decent baddie who by now must be tired of soothsaying heroes. And then there's Rishi Kapoor , who actually lets the mask slip and grins during the climax, knowing that this is one of the most embarrassing projects he's been in for a while. Kal Kissne Dekha is one of those films that won't suffer at all from bad word of mouth. Those who've watched it aren't likely to admit it in public, is all.

Kambakht Ishq all set to Release on 3rd July

The feeling of joy was felt in the air. It was celebration time and that was pretty apparent at Kambakkat Ishq’s press conference held at Taj Land’s End Bandra. A trade analyst present at the event said, “It as double bonanza! The first good news was that the United Producers Forum and Multiplex Assocation strike was called off. And the second one was to announce the release of the the much eagerly awaited and looked forward to film– Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kambakkt Ishq.” KI hits the theatres on 3rd July.

“It was celebration time, no doubt,” added the trade pundit. The trade analyst added, “There will be three releases every Friday. And Kambakkt Ishq is going to be one of the first big budget films to hit the theatres this year. The film has all the masala that go to make the film a hit.”

Shot on exotic locales in Los Angeles, Italy and Venice, with good dose of scene shot in world’s famous Hollywood studiothe film marks a historical moment for Indian cinema.

Lead stars Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor made it a point to be present on the occassion. Akshay, who was shooting in Karjat, flew down in a chopper to make it on time to the press conference, while Kareena cut her shooting short at Mehboob studios to share at length information about the film to the media. Kambakkt Ishq is also the first film to have Hollywood stars like Slyvester Stallone, Brandon Routh, Denise Richards are Hollywood stars making their presence felt in Bollywood.

Emraan ready to back again with "Tum Mile"

Yes readers thats right Emraan Hasmi is ready to dazzle you again with his new movie "Tum Mile" which is to be releasing soon in few months. Last movie of Emraan "Raaz" is a hit and now he has more expectations from "Tum Mile". The Tentative date for the releasing of "Tum Mile" will be 24th July.

Movies inspired by real events always seem to interest the audience. However these are the kind of movies that are even more difficult to produce as often one has to reproduce a part of the calamity or go in for major graphic enhancements. At the same time, a number of movies with the same theme may release, so audience may be divided during the competition. Also, the audience may not always appreciate this genre of cinema. Yet we see directors going in for this kind of cinema with verve and passion and more often than not, it pays off.

One of these kinds of movies is based on the Mumbai flood from 4 years ago, called Tum Mile. A production by Vishesh films and starring the talented Emraan Hashmi, the film is scheduled strategically to release on the 24th of July. Directed by Kunal Dehmukh of Jannat fame, audience is waiting for this release excitedly.

Vishesh films seems to be doing very well with Emraan Hashmi producing great hits. Raaz, the first and probably only hit of 2009 so far should give them great confidence to go on. Also, this film is special in the way that it marks the joining up with Pritam again after a number of previous hits. However they should have no reason to worry, as regardless of whether the movie is a hit or not, any movie with Emraan Hashmi always has hit music. One of those unsolved mysteries of bollywood.

Another movie “26th July at Barista” released last year with some newcomers. However, it was hardly heard of, and the crew of Tum Mile does not seem to be too worried about the release of the other movie. Starring opposite Soha Ali Khan, Emraan was pretty fascinated with the sets for the movie, saying , “You should have been on the sets to believe it”, says Emraan Hashmi, “Water level there was scary enough to actually drown people. Kunal (Deshmukh) wanted the situation to be an exact replica of the horrific flood situation that the city faced that fateful night. It was difficult to even imagine how commuters would have struggled with no support whatsoever.”

Though much news about the story of the movie has not been let out, it is believed that the movie is about how Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan are trapped during that fateful night. All the very best again to Vishesh Films!

Bollywood strike ends, films to release from next weeK

Aamir Khan Finally, the two-month long drought at the theatres is about to end as the producers/distributors and the multiplexes have reached an agreement over revenue sharing.

The standoff over the profit sharing ratios ended late on Thursday night after a 12-hour long meeting at Yashraj Studios between the exhibitors (multiplexes) and producers.

The strike began on April 4 by Bollywood producers who alleged that they stand to lose from the increasing demands of multiplexes for a larger chunk in the profits. The film industry stood united in strike and even big stars like Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan (who are producers as well) came out in full support of the producers’ demand.

Now, after two months of negotiations and failed talks, the impasse is broken and an agreement has finally been reached.

President of the Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association (IMPPA) Mukesh Bhatt has confirmed this to a news network. However, the official confirmation of the new profit sharing ratios is still awaited.

The top national multiplex chains in India are PVR, Big, Inox, Fame, Cinemax and Fun.

With the ending of the strike, new Bollywood movies will begin releasing from next week onward.

Kal Kissne Dekha , introducing Jackky Bhagnani and Vaishali Desai , is set to release on June 12.

Imran Khan Pal was born on 13th January 1983 in Wisconsin, USA. His father is Anant Pal, who is of Bengali-American origin, associated with Yahoo in Silicon Valley. His mother is Nuzhat Khan, Bollywood director Mansoor Khan’s sister. His parents were divorced when Imran was a year and half old, after which his mother moved back to India.

Nasir Hussain is his grandfather while Mansoor Khan is his uncle, both of whom are well known in Bollywood in their roles as director and producer. He can also boast of Aamir Khan as his uncle, who is an award-winning actor, producer and director and is playing an active role in mentoring and promoting his nephew.

A good news for all Himesh Fans that his 3rd movie as an actor named "Kajraare" to be a Diwali release. As per sources Himesh Reshammiya’s third film as an actor Kajraare, a T-Series’ production is all set to be a Diwali release. Directed by actress Pooja Bhatt the film stars opposite Himesh, Pakistani actress Mona Laizza apart from Amrita Singh and Gulshan Grover. The release date for the film is scheduled as October 16th. But on the same day two more biggies are slated for release, thats Hrithik Roshan - Barbara Mori - Kangana Ranaut starrer Kites and Ajay Devgan’s home production All The Best staring Sanjay Dutt, Fardeen Khan, Bipasha Basu, Mugdha Godse along with Ajay himself.

Kajraare is supposedly, a modernised remake of Mahesh Bhatt’s Pooja Bhatt-Sanjay Dutt starrer Sadak. But this move to release it on Diwali day seems no less than a hara-kiri claims trade pundits. Himesh began his acting career with a bang with a musical hit like Aap Ka Surroor but his next release, the Karz remake titled Karzzzz was a big turkey at the ticket window. His Kajraare was to release much earlier but reportedly, the on going recession took toll on it and the schedules kept getting pushed ahead. Now as its nearing completion, the makers are planning for a Diwali release. But with big mega budget oppositions like Kites and All The Best, we just hope the makers give the release date a rethink or else Himesh might have to work harder to prove himself yet again as an actor. A.R. Rehman Creates History

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Bollywood's A.R. Rahman won Oscars for original score and original song in Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" on Sunday, becoming the first Indian composer to strike gold at the annual Hollywood awards.

"Slumdog," which tells of a young man looking for love and competing for money on the Indian version of the television game show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire", scooped up eight Oscars, including best motion picture.

Rahman, 43, won the Original Song Oscar for 'Jai Ho'.

"Before coming, I was excited and terrified," Rahman said when accepting his Academy Award.

"Last time I felt like that was during my marriage," he added.

Rahman had also been named best composer at the Golden Globes last month.

Known for his musical versatility -- from romantic compositions to foot-tapping numbers, Rahman has innovated with different instruments and sounds to create some of India's best-known musical hits for nearly two decades.

Despite earlier international credits such as the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "Bombay Dreams", it is Rahman's work on British director Boyle's "Slumdog" that endeared him to Western critics.
